Photo (right) purportedly of Cornelius Westfall, who was probably born in Hampshire or Hardy County, Virginia about 1769 and died on Saul's Run in Lewis (now Upshur) County, Virginia about 1845. We have no record of his birth or death, but the U.S. censuses of 1810 through 1840 and his marriage in 1796 indicate he was born about 1770. He married Elizabeth Helmick on January 13, 1796 in Randolph County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Jacob Helmick of Randolph County. The style of dress and photograph is consistent with it being taken in the early 1840's. Photo posted on Ancestry.com by smithpapaw1 in February 2018. |

The name of his mother is not known, but his father was Jacob Westfall (1752-1795) who served during the American Revolution. Jacob was born in the Minisink area of western New Jersey and died in Randolph County, Virginia in 1795. Cornelius lived for a while near Clarksburg in Harrison County, then in Randolph County, finally settling on Saul's Run west of Buckhannon in what was then Lewis County, now Upshur County. The last record of him is the 1845 tax list of Lewis County when he and his son John H. are listed togeather for taxes on 100 acres on Saul's Run. The tax would have been assessed for the period 1744-1745. |

Lydia Wilson Smith Westfall, mother of Nathaniel J. Westfall, grandmother of Osa Westfall Corbett. This picture was probably taken not long before her death in 1907. She is buried next to daughter Lydia (Westfall) Markley in the old Harrison Grove Cemetery in Lewis County, WV. Some years ago her headstone was carried off by vandals and never found. |
Lydia was the daughter of George Wilson. She first married Solomon P. Smith with whom she had four sons, William McKindra "Uncle Kin", Thomas, David M. and Solomon E. Her children by John were my great grandfather Nathaniel Jonathan, Lydia Ann (Markly) and Nancy E. Westfall. |
