John Childress Whitsett
John Childress Whitsett was named for the family of his aunt Elizabeth Whitsett Childress. The Childress family had a son they named John Whitsett Childress who was the brother of First Lady Sarah Childress Polk. He was a major land speculator, buying up land ceded or siezed from Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Creek Indians removed from Alabama and Mississippi to the Indian Territory what is today Western Arkansas and most of Oklahoma. He was a member of the Alabama legislature until his death in 1860.
