Elizabeth Whitsett, (daughter of John Whitsett and Sarah Thompson of Sumner County, Tennessee), and Joel Childress were the parents of Sarah Childress Polk, wife of President James K. Polk. Information concerning the Whitsett grandparents of Mrs. Polk, Dr. William Heth Whitsitt, author of ANNALS OF A SCOTCH-IRISH FAMILY, The Whitsitt's of Nashville, Tennessee" (American Historical Magazine, Vol. IX, Nashville, Tennessee, 1904) received a letter from Mrs. Polk with some information about her grandparents, John and Sarah Thompson Whitsett.
