James Whitsett

Orange County, North Carolina

The ancestry of James Whitsett of Orange County, North Carolina has not been proven to the degree of certainty with which I am comfortable.  It is based entirely on circumstantial evidence.  I welcome any information that might help substantiate his pedigree.  Much of the information on his descendants was provided me by other researchers and I have not verified their sources.  If you are interested in this particular family line, you should make an effort to confirm any information you use.

Generation No. 1

1. James Whitsett (JohnA, WilliamB, SamuelC) was born Bef. 1747 in Pennsylvania, and died Abt. 1788 in Orange County, North Carolina. He married Mary Moore Bef. 1768 in Orange County, North Carolina. She was born Bef. 1752.

November 28, 1776: James Whitsett and Samuel Whitsett sign a petition of freeholders of Orange County, N. C.; other names are:
Joseph Hart
Samuel Hart
James Mebane
Richard Bird
John Walker

Both of these petitions were initiated because the election polls in Hillsboro closed early before all of the eligible voters could cast their ballots. A riot ensued. The petitioners complained that they were denied their right to vote.

Nov 9, 1784: Samuel Whitsett is granted 270 acres on the waters of Back Creek in Orange Co. adjacent James Whitsett; this land was originally entered by John Whitsett in 1778 and surveyed for him in 1782. This seems to indicate a relationship between these three Whitsett's. This also lends some support to the theory that John Whitsett was the father of James and Samuel.

1786: The sale of the estate of John Whitsett, deceased, was recorded in Orange County. The return from the sale mentions the following Whitsett's.: Widow Whitsett (no name), Mary Whitsett, Sarah Whitsett, James Whitsett and Samuel Whitsett. Samuel paid rent for the mill and plantation for four years.

Goodspeed, "History of Franklin" etc. information pertaining of John Whitsett and Alpha Witty of St. Louis, Mo. provided by their son James Whitsett.

"William Whitsett, father of James [of Rockingham Co., NC] was born near the northern boundary of England, and was the father of nine children, two girls and seven boys; six of his sons fought in the Revolutionary War."

The following is an interesting story. It parallels somewhat the family tradition of the John and Alpha Witty family (above), except for the difference of William Whitsett and James Whitsett. It appears that James's children were too young to have been in the Rev. War. It would not be unusual for both of the family traditions skipped a generation or two, thus this one attributed to James may be William or John, and the Missouri tradition skipped this James. The Goodspeed story was given at an earlier date than Mr. Dover's below

Leroy Dover of Montana wrote: "I am copying my grandfather's journal and found this."
"... I remember Great Grandmother Alpha Whitsett, who lived to be 85 years old and died in 1885, very well. ... Great Grandpa Whitsett's name was John was born in N. C. and married Alpha Witte of N. C. Great, great grandpa Whitsett,s name was James (Sr.) And he lived in N. C. during the Revolution. He had 5 sons in the American army but he himself was a loyal old Scotchman and was hanged for a Tory but a soldier who knew him cut him down saying, "Let the d--d old fool say what he liked as it did not amount to anything since he has five sons in the American Army!"

Whitsett joined the Confederate Army from Texas.  The Ellis children (children of Richard's sister Charlotte) were living in Richard's household when the 1870 census was taken in DeWitt County, Texas.

Whitsett, Texas was named for two sons of Richard and Jane Hill Whitsett as stated in this letter from Cecil P. Wilson, resident of Whitsett, Texas, to Cathy Lynn, San Jose, California, March 13, 1987.  "The land here was a Spanish Grant from Mexico to John Houllihan, in about 1829; which was about 4, 000 acres. John came from Ireland, as did the Whitsett family. The Whitsett people settled about 50 miles east of here. When John got too old to run his ranch, he sold it to the Whitsett boys, Sam and Taylor. Neither was married. They ran the ranch until 1912 when the railroad came in. They gave 620 acres to become a town. The town site was surveyed and marked off in blocks and lots. Some 10 acre blocks and 300x300 foot lots. About 140 in all. In later years the remaining ranch was sold to Blackwell, they to Deason and now belongs to Harrison. Presently the voting population is around 300; approximately 100 of those live in town. From 1931, when I came to Whitsett until about 1940, Whitsett was a thriving town of about 1000. We had a high school, 2 cotton gins, depot, 3 stores, cafe, 2 blacksmith shops, lumberyard, barber shop and hotel. The U.S. government programs tore the little town up; also, the school consolidated with the Three Rivers, Texas and took the school. Presently we still have a post office, beauty salon, beer joint, fire truck and community hall. A real good water system, comes from deep wells. Whitsett is a very nice quiet place with good sandy loam which in some places the top soil is 7 ft. deep. It will grow most any fruit or vegetable. The rainfall is about 36-40 inches a year."
