4. BERNHARD KUDER (ADAM³, HANS JAKOB², PHILLIPP¹) was born Abt. 1729 in Neckargartach, Wurttemberg, Germany, baptized February 15, 1728/29, Neckargartach, and died Abt. 1782 in Probably Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He married ANNA MARIA HOFFMAN, Widow of Wilhelm Hoffman, November 07, 1764 in Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. She died Abt. 1811 in Wythe County, Virginia.

Bernhard's name on the baptismal record is given as Hans Bernhart Kuder in keeping with the German tradition of the first name being the "chruch" name and the second for everyday use. At the age of 19, eleven years after his brother Hans Peter emigrated to America, Bernhard also set out for America, arriving in Philadelphia 16 Sep 1748 on the ship Patience from Rotterdam via Cowes, England.

Bernhard served as a wagon master in the Revolutionary War, and according to unconfirmed family lore was wounded either in the Battle of Brandywine, 11 Sep 1777, or in the Battle of Germantown which occurred less than a month later on 4 Oct 1777. He died, supposedly as a result of these injuries, on an unreported date which could not have been until 1781/82 or later in view of the birth date (24 Mar 1782) of his last child.

After Bernhard died, his wife Anna Maria and their last four children moved about 1782/83 to Wytheville, Wythe Co., in southwestern Virginia. It was at about this time that the family name was changed from Kuder or Kuter to Cooter to avoid pronunciations such as cutter. In Wythe Co. Bernhard's widow Anna Maria (name anglicized to MARY) married John Bishop of Virginia, and they had a son, John Bishop Jr., who was born about 1802. John Sr. died Jan/Feb 1804 in Wythe Co. In 1810 Anna Maria was living in the home of her son Philip Cooter; according to family tradition she died in Wythe Co. at the age of 108. The date of her death is not known but was probably about 1811.

He was born in Germany, and emigrated to Pennsylvania when he was young, the country being almost in a wilderness condition. Here he settled and grew up with the county, and raised a numerous progeny. Sixteen children were the fruits of his marriage.."

He was born May 19, 1840 in Sharon Township, Medina Co., Ohio, and died March 29, 1911 in Sharon Township, Medina Co., Ohio.

ABIGAIL KUDER, unidentified newspaper obituary, April 1910, "In Memoriam - Mrs. Abbie Wall, (nee Kuder) was born Jan. 4, 1844 in Sharon township, Medina county, O. She was the daughter of Jacob and Mary Kuder. On Dec. 12, 1861, she was united in holy wedlock to Reason Wall, at Wadsworth, O., by the Rev. Hamilton. To this union were born five children: Chas. Jacob, William Lorenzo, Albert Allen, Mary Sophia and Reason DeForest. A devoted husband, five children, fifteen grandchildren, one brother and many relatives and friends remain to mourn her death. Death came to her Thursday morning, April 7, after a week of intense suffering at the age of 66 years, 3 months and 3 days.

She married (1) CLYDE K. LEONARD Abt. 1922. She married (2) HAROLD MELVILLE WALL December 24, 1936 in Vicksburg, Michigan, son of REASON WALL and WINIFRED TYLER and her second cousin. He was born May 01, 1898 in Sharon Center, Medina Co., Ohio, and died August 28, 1988 in Portage, Michigan.

Unidentified newspaper anniversary announcement, Michigan, Dec. 1986; "Harold, Marie Wall - Mr. and Mrs. Harold M. Wall, 911 Bacon, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall at Berean Baptist Church, 7813 S. 12th. Mr. Wall and the former E. Marie Kuder were married Dec. 24, 1936. They have three children: Bud Leonard, Carol Dayton and Margo Raifsnider, all of Portage. They also have nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Wall is retired as a mill-worker at International Paper Co.

Harold and Marie lived in Kalamazoo most of their lives. They did live for a short time on the original family farm in Sharon Center, Ohio but moved back to Michigan in the 1940's. Devote Christians, they were charter members of the Lake Center Bible Church in Portage, Michigan and also later in the 1960's helped establish the Berean Baptist Church in Portage, Michigan.
