SAMUEL WHITSETT AND MARY STOCKARD OF ORANGE (ALAMANCE) COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
|
William Thornton Whitsett of Whitsett, Guildford County, North Carolina claimed that Samuel's parents were
Henry Whitsett and Jane Mebane. He believed that brothers
Henry and Adam Whitsett were sons of William Whitsett and Elizabeth
Dawson who came to North Carolina from Pennsylvania or Virginia (this family was well documented by their descendant Rev. William Heth Whitsitt and were only remotely connected).
Mr. Whitsett appears to have confused his Whitsett family with the near-by Whitsell family, a mistake that is easily made when reading hand written documents of the period. There
were two German immigrant brothers, Henry and Adam Whitsell (Weitzel)
who also settled in that part of early Orange County that is today Guilford
County, North Carolina. In the early hand-written records
it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between
the name "Whitsett" and "Whitsell" and that
difficulty may be the basis for his confusion. Some of my information on Samuel does come from the
papers of Mr. Whitsett. Unfortunately, he failed to
list sources for his claims.
I have found no conclusive evidence for Mary Stockard as the wife
of Samuel Whitsett.
That information is only found in Mr. Whitsett's papers as far as I know. The names of Samuel's children also come from Mr.
Whitsett, and is supported by my own research. Mr. Whitsett obtained some of his information
on his great great grandfather's family from his Uncle
Alfred Whitsett.

| Notes: |
|
Some of the information contained here comes from the papers of William
Thornton Whitsett. He listed no sources in his papers. Mr. Whitsett claimed that Samuel was the son of Henry Whitsett.
There is no evidence of a Henry Whitsett in Orange County, but there is evidence, although circumstantial, for John Whitsett of Ireland,
Pennsylvania and North Carolina. It appears to me that Mr. Whitsett confused the name Henry Whitsell of Guilford Co. for Henry Whitsett. [1] |
