Rachel Collier's Whitsett and Whitsitt Family History

The Whitsitt Ancestors of Rachel Glennie Collier - Part 1

For continuation of these family lines,
Go to Part 2 - William Whitsitt of Jefferson County, Indiana

PLEASE NOTE:   In a previous edition of Rachel's pages I included comments where I felt Rachel's data was incorrect.  This was wrong of me.  In this revised edition I am presenting her data without those remarks. Her hard work is presented here without editorial interference from me.  Rachel, please accept my apologies.  It is not my duty, or my intention to be the arbitrator of everything Whitsett.  In work of this scope there is bound to be differences of opinion.

Some of my conclusions about the early Whitsett family are very different from Rachel's and those of some of her sources.  My main differences of opinion are these:  Rachel gives the middle name of William who married Elizabeth Dawson and his son William who married Ellen Menees as "Thomas."  I have seen no evidence, and Rachel provides none, to show that this is true.  Most importantly, Dr. William Heth Whitsitt, the authority on this family, never mentions this name.  Rachel gives the middle name of Samuel who married Margaret as "Varner."  This is not supported by evidence.  His son may have been Samuel Varner, but there appears to be no evidence that Samuel Sr. was named that.  There are other differences I feel are unsupported by evidence, but those mentioned here are among the most important.  As with all research by other people, you should verify the information and sources yourself if you have a particular interest in a family.  This is true of my research as well.

To see my take on the family, please click on THE IMMIGRANT WHITSETT FAMILIES OF PENNSYLVANIA.  This new page is based on recent research (2007-2008) that has uncovered a gold mine of information on the Whitsett brothers who came to Pennsylvania from Ireland.  It clears up some of the confusion surrounding that generation (the generation of Samuel's father).  The immigrant brothers were: Ralph (Samuel's father), John (who went to N. C. and died in Orange Co. in 1786), James, who died in Pennsylvania in 1761, but whose family went to Mecklenburg Co., N. C., and William who married Elizabeth Dawson.  There was no brother Joseph among the immigrants, but Samuel did have a brother named Joseph who went to Kentucky.  There was also a sister, Elizabeth Whiteside, who married John Welsh in Lebanon Township, Lancaster County in 1738.

This web page is devoted to the genealogy research done by Rachel Ann Collier of Woodward, Oklahoma who is the daughter of Kathryn Ann Whitsitt Glennie.  Although she has many family lines in her data, due to the nature of this web site, I have included here only her Whitsitt genealogy.  I have provided links to pages on our web site for information in my own research.  If you have questions about Rachel's information, I will attempt to forward your query to her.  As with any information you find on the web, or in any publication, you should verify for yourself data on individuals your are researching.

Rachel donated to me her extensive family research, along with many photos, back in 2001 or 2002.  At the time I had a web site named "The Arkansas PC Guy" related to my business of PC home repair and tutoring in personal computers and software.  However, most of the site was devoted to genealogy.  In 2003 my Internet Service Provider went out of business and my site went "off the air."  At about the same time we purchased some land and a home out in the desert north of Florence, Arizona.  As soon as we were comfortably settled in, I obtained my current ISP and began reconstructing my web site, which you are now visiting.  Unfortunately, Rachel's data languished in my CD archives.  Recently I realized my omission and am now rectifying the situation.

Due to the size of her material I have split her family tree into multiple sections.  I have provided enough overlap so that you can connect these different family trees.

Descendants of William Whiteside

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM WHITESIDE was born in Antrim County, Ireland, and died 1727 in Antrim County, Ireland.

Notes for WILLIAM WHITESIDE: The identity of this William is speculation by Charles Dixon based on the "Index to the Conner Diocese- 1858."  There is an entry concerning the death in 1727, of one William noted in the index as the father of Samuel Whiteside.

Known Child of WILLIAM WHITESIDE is:

2. i. SAMUEL WHITSITT, b. Aft. 1647, Antrim County, Ireland; d. 1754, Antrim County, Ireland/Virginia.

Generation No. 2

2. SAMUEL WHITSITT (WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born Aft. 1647 in Antrim County, Ireland, and died 1754 in Antrim County, Ireland or possibly Virginia. His wife was born in Ireland.  More About SAMUEL WHITSITT: Burial: 1754.

It is assumed the Whitsitt's landed in Pennsylvania along with other Scots-irish immigrants at that time - the ship that bore them and the precise date of its arrival are as yet unknown. The Whitsitt's were a numerous tribe in Ireland where they bore, and may still bear, the name -WHITESIDE. IN HIS TURN OF THE CNETURY REVIEW OF THE NASHVILLE WHITSITTS-William H. Whitsitt writes that the Whiteside/Whitsitt's immigrated to Ireland from near ANNANDALE, SCOTLAND. The WHITESIDES appear to have been a sept of the BELL clan. In 1685, JOHN BELL OF WHITESIDE headed the clan. It is not illogical that the "BELLS OF WHITESIDE" became the WHITESIDES and later due to phonetic spelling the WHITESIDE'S became the WHITESITT'S then the WHITSITT'S.  A Mr. Hanna in an early work entitled, "The Scotch-Irish; or the Scot in North Britain, North Ireland and North America" published in New York and London, 1802, cites the death of John Bell of Whiteside in 1685- "having surprised Bell and friends, Sir Robert Grierson commanding a party of Calverhouse's troupe and Strauchan's Dragoons captured and barbarously killed them after quarter, without time allowed to pray. When Bell begged a little time to pray, Grierson answered: "What the devil have ye been doing? Have ye not prayed enough these many years in the hills?", and so shot him presently in the Parish of Tongland in Galloway, Feb 1685".
About 1741 the Whitsitt's came to Albemarle County, Virginia, remaining in this area until 1767, early records of Albemarle County were destroyed by the British under Tarleton in June 1781; however, Whitesides Creek remains on county maps to this day.

Subject: Trip to Ireland
Kathy,
I just got back from a trip to England and Ireland. While in Ireland I went to the Library in Dublin to do a little research and came away a little disappointed. Thru the computer in the research center I checked the spelling of Whitsett/Whitsitt/Whitsell/Whitzel/ and Whiteside. The only thing I found was Whiteside that still live in the Londonderry area, in counties of Antrim, Armagh, Derry and Down. There were ten families still listed. According to a professional genealogists at the library, all information before 1720 was lost in a fire. She suggested that I go thru church records to see if they had any information. I have been working on that and so far no luck, but will keep trying. Also I am going to try the Ulster Genealogical and Historical Guild to see if I can find anything there. Two web sites that she gave me was www.uhf.org.uk in Antrim and Down, and www.iol.ie/irishworld. I haven't had time to check them out since I have been home but hope to in the next couple of days.
I found Ireland to be a beautiful country and wish I could have spent more time there visiting different parts of the country. The people were very friendly, helpful and overall wonderful.
Till Later,
God Bless,
Ida

4. WILLIAM THOMAS WHITSITT (WILLIAM3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born 1709 in Antrim County, Ireland, and died October 24, 1798 in Amherst County, Virginia. He married ELIZABETH DAWSON 1729 in Antrim Co, Ireland. She was born in Ireland.

Notes for WILLIAM THOMAS WHITSITT: From Melton Family History sent by Phyliss Whitsett to Kathy Whitsett. In 1989: Samuel Whitsett (Whitesides) birthplace unknown. Dr. William Thornton Whitsett wrote an early day History on the Whitsett family, but mostly on Whitsett's in North Carolina. He says the first known families by this name came to America about 1740 from Antrim Co. Ireland. There were three brothers, John, Joseph and William. William's wife Elizabeth, and his two young sons. William and Henry. They settled for a while in the lower Valley of the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, PA. From there they went into VA-NC-TN- and MO.

According to him the name spelled various ways, Whitesides, Whitsed, Whitsitt, Whitsid and Whitsett. Between 1731 and 1770 thousands of Scotch-Irish landed in PA and settled up and down the Susquehanna Valley and Appalachian Ridges.  In land records of KY, Whitsett from 1790's. Samuel's Birth place and date are unknown. On the Court House in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Co. Ky. is a bronze plaque with the names of Rev. Soldiers. The name of Samuel Whitsett is on Plaque. (Not known at this time how name came to be placed there. Samuel is not in Published DAR records). A Samuel Whitsett and Maggie Tuttle entered Montgomery Co. KY.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION PER CHARLES DIXON

"This is the lineage of the Nashville Whitsitt's. The 'WHITSITT PAPERS' [Dr. William Thornton Whitsett] at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, state that the immigration occurred when William III was nine years old, or approximately 1740. These papers also name the brothers John and Joseph of William II as having immigrated at the same time. These papers further established the brothers as "noted Indian Fighters", especially William, "who was easily the leader of the brothers." This contrasts somewhat with Dr. W. H. Whitsitt, who in his history of the Whitsitt's in middle Tennessee relates the immigration occurred while the younger William was an infant.

"The Nashville Whitsitt's have retained no records or traditions of there being children, other than William III (often erroneously called Jr.) as a result of the marriage between William Whitsitt and Elizabeth Dawson.

"There is however existing evidence (McLhany's, "Some Virginia Families", Staunton, Virginia 1903) that, at least two and possibly three additional sons were born. McLhany quotes, "They had a family of several children". He further cites that a son, James married Ann, called Nancy, Kinney in Amherst Co., Aug 7, 1792. He continues, James went with his brother Samuel from Amherst Co., to purchase land in Tennessee" on the return trip, in 1795, James drowned while attempting to cross the Tennessee River. Samuel stayed in Tennessee but never married. There are also references to a possible fourth son, Thomas, in patents registered in Albemarle County. Unfortunately the burning of most of these records, by the notorious British Colonies 'Butcher Tarleton' during the Revolutionary War destroyed much of the Whitsitt history in Virginia. What is certain is that names like James and Samuel and Thomas are common to the Nashville Whitsitt's."

5. WILLIAM THOMAS WHITSITT (WILLIAM THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born August 20, 1731 in Antrim County, Ireland, and died July 14, 1811 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He married ELENOR MENEES May 30, 1764 in Amherst Co., Virginia - near Bethel, Lancaster Co, Pa, daughter of JAMES MENEES/MCNEES and ELLEN CARDWELL. She was born December 03, 1746 in Bethel, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and died September 13, 1818 in Rural Choir, [Rural Choice] Kentucky.

Per Charles Dixon :

The Marriage record of William Whitsitt and Ellen Menees as recorded by the Rev. Stoever in Lancaster County, PA states, "May 30 1764, William Whiteside and Eleanor McNees, Bethal." Bethel being the township in Lancaster Co. near where the Marriage took place. What is interesting is the "Whiteside-McNees" names recorded above. In Ireland the Whitsitt's were known as the Whitesides and the Menees as McNees - probably because of phonetic spelling, common at these times, the family names evolved in the manner that they did as late as the early 1800's, records move back and forth between Whitsitt - Whiteside, and Menees - McNees. The Whitsitt's in earlier times were identified as the "Bells of Whiteside." The true derivation of the name may well have been "Bell to Whiteside to Whitesides to Whitesitt to Whitsitt".

THESE TWO FAMILIES WERE CLOSELY ASSOCIATED FOR GENERATIONS IN SCOTLAND, IRELAND, PENNSYLVANIA, VIRGINIA AND TENNESSEE. Several instances of inter-marriage between the families are recorded. Though not much is known or recorded about the families in Penn.

BY 1752 The Whitsitt's had migrated to Albemarle County, Virginia, where William III was a member of the Albemarle Militia during the French-Indian wars. (1752-1763).   During this period the Virginia militia was commanded by one, George Washington.

It is recorded that, "the years in Albemarle were occupied by a fierce and trying Indian War." Upon his marriage to Eleanor "Ellen" Menees - only daughter of James Menees, SR - William Whitsitt III moved to Amherst Co., VA ostensibly seeking a peace that did not come, as Indian attacks continued to occur and in 1776 the Revolutionary War broke out. At the out break of the War, William was 45 years old, with at least seven of his eventual 11 children having been born. On 10-01-1781 - 18 days prior to Lord Cornwallis' surrender and war's end-William III sold his Amherst lands and possessions and the family moved to Henry Co., VA (near what is Martinsville, VA). In 1790 the family moved once again. This time to Tennessee.

It was then William III, probably at the influence of his wife Ellen, who transitioned and shortened the name Whiteside or Whitesides to Whitsitt. Deeds issued in Amherst, VA evidence use of both names - though when the Whiteside name was used his wife signed only "his wife Ellie"; evidencing a preference for the shorter Whitsitt. Later in Tennessee both names were used - 640 acres were purchased at Neely's Bend under the name Whitsitt in 1795, later 160 acres, of this same land, were sold by Whiteside (02/24/1801). It appears the common usage was Whitsitt, with only occasional use of Whiteside. Records of the time show this was becoming common usage among Whitsitt-Whitesides in both the northern and southern sectors of the country. Adaptation of the shorter form - Whitsitt - was also occurring simultaneously, though at a much slower pace, in Ireland.

In 1801 they moved to Logan County, Kentucky. The current town of Russelville stands on land owned by William Whitsitt while the family resided in Kentucky.  He is credited with being one of the town founders. The family returned to Tennessee and William passed away, in Davidson County, on the 14 July 1811. His wife, Ellie, returned to Kentucky and lived there with her daughter and son-in-law until she too passed on in Sept 1818.

It was the Blakey's that Ellen Menees joined in KY following the death of her husband William III. Ellen lived the remainder of her life in their home at, Rural Choice, in Logan County.

Children of WILLIAM WHITSITT and ELENOR MENEES are:

i. ELLEN WHITSITT, b. 1765, Amherst County, Virginia; d. March 1816.

Notes for ELLEN WHITSITT: There was an Ellen Frances and an Frances Whitsitt yet both were married to Judge Ewing. One in the same person.  PER BILL MITCHELL she was born 1770 and died Mar of 1816.

8. ii. ELIZABETH DAWSON WHITSITT, b. November 23, 1765, Amherst County, Virginia; d. April 03, 1834, Logan Co. Ky.

9. iii. MARGARET WHITSITT, b. October 23, 1767, Amherst County, Virginia; d. October 25, 1859, Logan Co. Ky.

iv. JANE WHITSITT, b. 1769; d. 1775. Notes for JANE WHITSITT: These dates were per Charles Dixon.

10. v. JAMES WHITSITT, b. January 31, 1771, Amherst Co., Va; d. Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.

vi. SAMUEL WHITSITT, b. Abt. 1773, Amherst County, Virginia; d. 1792, Nashville, Davidson Co, Tennessee.  PER CHARLES DIXON SAMUEL WAS BORN 1773 AND DIED IN 1800.

vii. NANCY WHITSITT, b. Abt. 1775, Amherst County, Virginia; d. Aft. July 02, 1811, Nashville, Davidson Co, Tennessee.  THESE BIRTH AND DEATH DATES MAY BE QUESTIONABLE.

viii. ELLEN WHITSITT, b. 1779, Amherst County, Virginia; d. March 26, 1834, Logan Co. Ky; m. JUDGE REUBEN EWING/EUING, Abt. 1802, Russelville, Logan Co. Ky.

PER CHARLES DIXON

References to Ellen as Eleanor exist. Most probably she was Christened Eleanor and called Ellen just as was her mother. Ellen moved to Kentucky with the family, it was there that she met and married her husband, Reuben Ewing. Her husband was much admired by the Whitsitt's. This is evidenced by the fact that several Whitsitt children in seceding generations were given the name Reuben or Reuben Ewing - my own great- great grandfather being one of them. Some differences of opinion exist over the dates for her birth, marriage and death.   Mrs. Nuss cites the Kentucky DAR as listing the birth in 1780 in Amherst Co., VA. (the KY DAR would have no official status for listing VA births). The Logan County Marriage Book, per Mrs. Nuss lists the marriage on 02-25-1796. These dates fall a few years after or before those Dr. [William Heth] Whitsitt recorded. There were 11 of these children and I'm sure the dates tend to get stretched and overlap as individuals are confused with each other.

6. JOHN WHITSITT (WILLIAM THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born 1746 in Amherst Co. Virginia/Londonderry, Ire., and died 1786 in Orange Co., North Carolina.

Note by Bob Whitesitt:

17-Nov-1986) Serious doubts have arisen concerning the relationship of John and Samuel V. Whitsitt having been brothers. The fact of them being brothers should be disregarded until such time as we can prove it one way or the another.  Several pieces of evidence point to Samuel V. and a Joseph Whitsitt as having been brothers. A Joseph Whitsitt is said to have migrated into Tennessee.  Anyone with evidence to that might clear up this relationship please contact:  [NOTE: please see THE IMMIGRANT WHITSETT FAMILIES OF PENNSYLVANIA on this web site for newly uncovered information; new research supports the conclusion that Samuel's father (not Samuel) had a brother John.  That John went to North Carolina and was the great grandfather of Sarah Childress Polk.  Joseph was Samuel's brother; he died in Harrison County, Kentucky.]

I believe it is another William Whitsitt who was a descendant of Samuel Varner Whitsitt's brother John who separated from Sam and went south to North Carolina. I am 99.9% certain that this is correct. The Logan County Whitsitt's are from North Carolina. Our Whitsitt's were never there. Logan County is about 150-200 miles south east of Montgomery County KY.

Per William Mitchell (Bill) John was born in Amherst Co. Virginia.

Naturalized 22 sept 1770 Orange County, North Carolina

Children of JOHN WHITSITT and JUDITH TOLLY are:

13. i. MARGARET WHITSETT, b. 1765; d. August 01, 1844, Belfast, Marshall Co., Tennessee.

14. ii. ABSOLOM WHITSETT, b. 1770; d. 1814.

15. iii. ELIZABETH WHITSETT

7. SAMUEL VARNER WHITSETT (WILLIAM THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born Abt. 1747 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland., and died 1815 in Montgomery Co, Kentucky. He married (1) ELIZABETH BRUCKRITE. She died. He married (2) MARGARET TUTTLE July 06, 1766 in Pennsylvania.

Notes for SAMUEL VARNER WHITSETT:  When Samuel and his brother immigrated here from Antrim County North Ireland and that their ship left from Londonderry Ireland (we think) Samuel went to Pennsylvania and John went South to Tennessee. Samuel and John were in the Revolutionary war. Samuel fought with Virginia when they were trying to claim Western Pennsylvania. The Whitsitt Family was granted land in Indiana for the service of serving in the Revolutionary war. Virginia Colonial Records or Pennsylvania Colonial records you will see Samuel's name on some affidavits on record in History.  Samuel owned a Farm at Mt. Sterlin (A Small town that still barely exists) Many Whitsitt's are buried in Mt. Sterling Cemetery. Samuel was buried on his Farm. Per Gordon Weddle some family members went there to find his grave not to long ago and the old farm had been bulldozed up. They found half of a Tombstone in a creek bed nearby. Was his grave bulldozed up?

Elizabeth Bruckrite received per source of the Daughters of American Colonist, Member #19070 A Revolutionary War Pension based on Samuel whitsett's Service in the American War.

One story indicates that Samuel was a sheriff in Lancaster but we have no evidence of this.

In a Court House at Pennsylvania, a Plaque hangs with the names of men in the Revolutionary war from there and Samuel Whitsitt name is on it. The Whitsitt name is a well traveled name. A town in Pennsylvania is named after a Whitsitt, was this Samuel? A town in Washington is named Whitsitt. Also in North Carolina. The Whitsitt's are everywhere, Look for Whitsit, Whitsett,Whitsid, Whetset.

It is theorized even that the Whitsitt descendants have a claim to fame. John Whitsitt went south to Tennessee. John married and had a daughter. This daughter married a Childress and had a daughter. This daughter Johns Granddaughter ) married James K Polk, The president of the United States of America. Miss Childress was responsible for the song Hail to the Chief. You see when James K Polk would walk into a room he was such a short man that people didn't know he was there. So his wife decided they needed to play a song when the President entered into a Room and then everyone would know he was there. This has yet to be proven and will be worked on. We shall see.

Samuel came to Kentucky from perhaps Fayette County, Pennsylvania about 1786. Some records indicate he came to Kentucky in 1790. In 1803, he was located on Lulbegrud Creek, Montgomery County, Kentucky.

Notes for REVEREND JAMES W BLAKEY: This information is Per Bill (William T.) Mitchell. A Reverend James Whitsitt had the same birth date and death date and marrying the same woman as this James Blakey. One of them is wrong. I believe this James W Blakey was not married to Jane Cardwell and his birthday was not 31 Jan 1771 Death 31 Jan 1850 and very possibly not even a Reverend.

10. JAMES WHITSITT (WILLIAM THOMAS5, WILLIAM THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born January 31, 1771 in Amherst Co., Va, and died in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He married (1) JANE CARDWELL 'JENNY' MENEES (MCNEES) December 10, 1792 in Nashville, Davidson Co, Tennessee, Fort Nashborough, daughter of JAMES MENEES and ELIZABETH. She was born January 21, 1779 in Amherst County, Virginia, and died June 10, 1840 in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee. He married (2) ELIZABETH WOODRUFF September 17, 1840 in Nashville, Davidson Co, Tennessee.

FOLLOWING INFORMATION FROM CHARLES DIXON;

when James married his first cousin Jenny Menees at Fort Nashborough in 1792, it was, according to a misguided family legend, the first marriage at the Fort. They may well have been married within the confines of the fort as the indians were hostile at that time, or the marriage may even have taken place at the Menees' Home near Flat Rock, but much evidence exists to refute any "first" claim. There is some evidence; however, that the Flat Rock home was not yet complete, thus the Menees may still have been at Neely's Bend at the time of the wedding. If this was true then the wedding most surely was held in the confines of the Fort.  But since the fort had been in existence for 12 years at the time of this marriage, one has to wonder at the legitimacy of the "first" claim. To further muddy the 1st marriage claim the State Library and Archives of Tennessee maintains marriage records for Davidson County. Dating from 1789 - two years prior to the marriage of James and Jenny, and during this period there were few places to marry except for the Fort.

Calvin M Fackler in his excellent history of Danville, Kentucky (Early Days of Danville, 1941 Standard Printing, Louisville), on page 11 relates an anecdote about a 1780 marriage in Nashville (Cornelius Riddle to Jane Mulherin) where food supplies were so low that two riders were dispatched to Danville to obtain a small quantity of corn, to make meal for the wedding supper. I cite this because of the date, a full 12 years prior to the whitsitt-Menees nuptials, and at a time when all settlers were living in or very near the fort. Mr. Fackler further states that his source (Guild, Joseph C., "Old Times in Tennessee." Nashville 1878) cites a previous wedding where supplies were just as short, though no one went as far as central KY to obtain food supplies for that one.

It is true that the Reverend and Jenny spent their entire married life on a farm of 640 acres on Mill Creek in Davidson County, TN. The farm had been presented them by her father, James Menees, in August 1796. They called their home place, "Solitude". Of the 640 acres deeded by James Menees to James Whitsitt, 160 acres were reserved for the purpose of building a house where he, Menees, might live in the immediate neighborhood of his daughter and son-in-law. The 160 acres was to, and did, revert to the Whitsitt's upon his death.

James whitsitt is believed to have grown up in the Episcopalian Church (the some evidence indicates that the family may have originally been Presbyterian) One fact is certain, that in 1785 a great Baptist revival began in Virginia, and lasted through 1792. Early records describe this revival as, "by far the most important movement of the kind that was ever enacted in the State of Virginia. It revolutionized affairs and altered the face of religious Society. It touched all denominations alike and it was quite plain that the Baptist were established upon new and better foundations. "It was during this revival that James whitsitt United with the Baptists, was baptized and applied for license to become a minister. Later, during his stay in Virginia James drifted into skepticism and anti-Baptist views - most probably due to the influence of his brother-in-law, William Breathitt. At the time James was living in the Breathitt home as the rest of the family had departed for Tennessee. (circa 1790). Breathitt persuaded young James that he had acted under excitement and with undue haste in departing from the church of his fathers and uniting with the Baptists. Sources are quoted citing that "He instantly relinquished preaching, stated a case to the Baptist brethren without disguise and, since nothing else could satisfy him, sought a prompt exclusion from the Church(Baptist)." However the Church on Beaver Creek demurred to his request, stating that he had committed no act that deserved such a penalty. Forcing the point James went to the Beaver Creek Church dressed in fashionable clothes, with his hair done up into a "cue" - this was really "getting wild" for a Baptist in this period - whereupon the good brethren yielded the point and promptly excluded him. (note: John Leland in his, "Virginia Chronicles" says that, "upon the first rise of the Baptist in Virginia they were very strict in dress, men cut their hair like Cromwell's roundheaded chaplains, and women cast away all their superfluities; so they were distinguished from others by their appearance and plain dress.")

Following his marriage, in Tennessee to Jane Menees, and under the joint influence of his bride and her father, his sympathy for the Baptist truth and interests began to return. In the course of time - it must have been short as he didn't leave the church until 1791, and married in 1792 - he requested reinstatement by letter to the Reverend Joseph Anthony, in which he made satisfactory acknowledgments to the Beaver Creek Church in VA., and was restored to its fellowship and to his station as a licensed minister. He then went to work and with his father-in -law founded the Mill Creek Baptist Church in Davidson Co. Tenn. Officially recognized April 15, 1797, the church was actually organized in the autumn of 1794. James Whitsitt preached continually at the Mill Creek Church from 1794 until 1846. In a "History of the Mill Creek Baptist Church," written by Mrs. Cheatham O. Paris in 1935 there is a brief reference to a Mrs. Elizabeth Woodruff, as James Whitsitt's second wife. Family members surviving at this writing were not aware of this and currently no official records have been found that establish this event - it would have occurred between the death of Jane Menees, in 1840, and that of the Rev. whitsitt in 1849.

This same history cites the Woodruff's as being early members of the church. A typed copy of this history was among the possessions of Mrs. J. L. Wright (The Reverend's granddaughter, Margaret) and if incorrect she certainly would have noted the inaccuracy, we therefore assume it to be true reference. (note: additional evidence indicates this marriage did take place on September 17 1840 - see the following)

In a history of the, "Concord Baptist Church, 1804-1846", by George Franklin Watson, further reference to this second marriage is made and a date of 17 Sept 1840 is given (approximately 3 months after the death of Jenny Menees). The Rev Whitsitt took pastoral care of the Concord Church in Williamson County - during the period 1797-1846. While his main church was Mill Creek, in addition to Concord, he also ministered to the Rock Springs and Providence Churches of Rutherford County. There is no record of any children resulting from this pairing.

11. WILLIAM WHITSITT (WILLIAM THOMAS5, WILLIAM THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) Major[?] General William Whitsitt was born 1780 in Amherst County, Virginia, and died March 21, 1842 in Canton, Mississippi. He married EMILY HADEN 1800 in Logan Co. Ky, daughter of CAPT WILLIAM HADEN. She was born Abt. 1782 in Logan Co. Ky.

Per Bill Mitchell: William III Served in War of 1812 as Major General

CHARLES DIXON AGREES WITH BILL MITCHELL ON THE BIRTH AND DEATH DATES Per Charles to account for all individuals carrying the name William Whitsitt, I have designated this one William IV, as he was the fourth to carry the name - two died in Ireland, and two in America. This particular William did go through his life as William Jr., and patents bearing his signature will note that (tho in some cases, probably most, he too merely signed William Whitsitt). During the War of 1812, this William entered the United States Army and was posted on the Northwestern Frontier in on or about Sept 12, 1812. He remained in the field under the command of William Henry Harrison until Dec 1814. He formed a strong attachment to Harrison. After returning to Kentucky following the war he became very involved in politics of the Democratic Party - especially as they affected his nephew, John Breathitt - who became Gov. of KY in 1832. In 1837 he left KY for Mississippi, spending all his remaining days there until his death in 1842. William married Emily Haden in 1800. They had four children

Children of WILLIAM WHITSITT and EMILY HADEN are:

i. ELLEN WHITSITT, m. WILLIAM COMFORT, 1821.

Notes for ELLEN WHITSITT:  Per Charles Dixon,  "About 1830 the Comforts moved to Canton, Mississippi. When William moved from KY, in 1837, it was to join his daughter and her family. When William Henry Harrison declared for the presidency in 1840 as the Whig party candidate, William Whitsitt left the Democratic party and stumped the state of Mississippi for Harrison. William Whitsitt bore the honorary title, "General". This was not a rank he obtained while serving in the field, but came following the war, most probably from serving as a commander of Kentucky Militia Brigade."

ii. ANN HADEN WHITSITT.

iii. SALLY WHITSITT.

iv. WILLIAM CHURCHILL WHITSITT.

After his death she married (2) REESE PORTER 1805 in Russellville, Logan Co. Ky. He was born in Giles Co., Tennessee.

Notes for SARAH WHITSITT:  Unclear if this Susan Whitsitt, called Sally, was William Thomas Jr Whitsitt daughter AND that he also had a sister by this name. BIRTH DATES AND DEATH DATES WERE PROVIDED  PER CHARLES DIXON

Notes for WM. J. CON EWING: This Ewing is probably a brother to Ellen Frances Whitsitt's husband - Judge Reuben Ewing.

Children of SARAH WHITSITT and REESE PORTER are:

i. REESE WHITSITT PORTER, b. 1806, Russellville, Logan Co. Ky.

ii. DAUGHTER PORTER, b. Abt. 1807, Russellville, Logan Co. Ky.

iii. DAUGHTER PORTER, b. Abt. 1809, Russellville, Logan Co. Ky.

He was born April 03, 1761 in Orange Co., North Carolina, and died May 18, 1823 in Belfast, Marshall Co., Tennessee.

Notes per Bill Mitchell: Family Bible Records of Joseph McAdams giving Marriage date and children's births were included with the Revolutionary War Pension application made in Marshall Co. Tennessee August term of the court of 1840. Book A, page 409 by Margaret McAdams, Widow of Joseph McAdams NO. 7606 - pension No. R-6579, included was a copy of the original page from the family bible. Moved to Tennessee NLT 1814.  Joseph McAdams served in the Revolutionary war first under Capt. Carrington in the regiment commanded by Hugh Tinnen. He later saw service under Capt. George Hodge. He moved to Lincoln Co., Tennessee after 1804 on Cane Creek south of Lewisburg near James Brown, Jesse McLean, and Henry Bagley. 15. ELIZABETH WHITSETT (JOHN5, WILLIAM THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) She married CAPT JOEL CHILDRESS.

Children of ELIZABETH WHITSITT and CAPT CHILDRESS are:

i. SARAH CHILDRESS, b. September 04, 1803, Near Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., Tn.; d. August 14, 1891, Nashville, Tn.; m. JAMES KNOX POLK, January 01, 1824, Nr Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., Tn.; b. November 02, 1795, Mecklenburg Co., N. C.; d. June 1849, Columbia, Maury Co., Tn.

Shortly after James K. Polk's death in 1849, his widow adopted the young daughter of a niece who had died recently. The child, Sarah Jetton, grew up at Mrs. Polk's Nashville home and provided companionship for the former First Lady. When the girl married local merchant George William Fall, Mrs. Polk persuaded the couple to live with her.

When Mrs. Polk died in 1891, her beloved great-niece inherited many family possessions including White House items. To call attention to James K. Polk's overlooked accomplishments, Mrs. Fall planned public exhibitions of the President's personal belongings and political memorabilia. In 1924, her daughter Saidee Fall Grant founded the James K. Polk Memorial Association to continue efforts to collect, preserve, and display Polk artifacts.

Although the Association originally exhibited its collections at several locations in Nashville, the organization recognized that James K. Polk's surviving home in Columbia, Tennessee would be an ideal site for a Presidential museum. In 1929, the Association helped the State of Tennessee raise funds to purchase the house. The State assumed ownership of the historic home; the Association agreed to maintain the property and display its artifacts there.

In accordance with its original mission statement, the James K. Polk Memorial Association works to "perpetuate the memory of the eleventh President of the United States." If you would like to join the Association or support its projects, please email us at jkpolk@usit.net

16. WILLIAM WHITSITT (SAMUEL VARNER5 WHITSETT, WILLIAM THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born May 06, 1767 in Pennsylvania, and died in Jefferson Co, Deputy, Indiana. He married (1) REBECCA MALCOMB/FORCAN in Jennings Co., Ind. She was born March 10, 1776 in Virginia, and died in Jefferson Co, Indiana. He married (2) MARGARET ANNE MCGEE February 21, 1797 in Clark Co., Ky. He married (3) MARTHA 'PATSY' WOODARD Abt. 1812 in Ky. She was born Abt. 1782 in Kentucky, and died Aft. January 23, 1820. He married (4) NANCY GREENE/HILL March 09, 1820 in Jennings Co, Indiana, daughter of THOMAS GREENE. She was born April 11, 1790 in R. I., and died 1828.  William was buried May 12, 1854, Jefferson Co, Deputy, Indiana, Hansell Cemetery (Mt. Carmel) 2 Miles SE of Deputy.

Could be Whitsitt, or Whitsett, or Whitsit.  Look to Jefferson County for information on William. William was removed from Montgomery County Kentucky to Jefferson County, Indiana. He married his 2nd wife Mrs. Nancy Green Hill March 9 1820 by Elder Thomas Hill. He married his 4th wife Rebecca Malcomb, Mrs Rebecca Forceu. Some sources for William Whitsitt: 1820-60 U.S. Census, Gibson County, Indiana. The Hoosier Genealogist, Vol 9,No 6; Vol 10, no 5; Vol 11, no 4; vol 13, no 4; Vol 18, no 3.

Written in a Whitsitt family Bible it states that Williams death was the 8th of May of 1854.  It is also recorded that William death was in 1856 at age 89 years. The 1856 is more likely.

The cemetery where William is buried is Hansell Cemetery also known as Mt. Carmel Cemetery. This is located about 2 mi SE of Deputy in Jefferson County IN and is to location of the graves of William Whitsitt Sr. and his 4th wife Rebecca Malcomb (no relation to us) and of Chesley and James's Sister Sara (Sally) Whitsitt Stewart and her family. Per Gordon K Weddle," I have a better photo of William's gravestone but remember the computer problems."

The Henry Clay Whitsitt/Minerva stone is at Bethany Baptist Cemetery also in Jefferson County IN and about 1 mile from Hansell Cemetery. Henry Clay Whitsitt was Gordon's great grandfather and was the first child born to Chesley Whitsitt. Henry Clay is the one who came to Kansas for a while. He would have been a nephew of our Joseph.

William is the one who was quartermaster in the Revolutionary War. We know this because of a handwritten letter of one of his grandsons in which it was said that he swam the Ohio river at Cincinnati and helped to "herd the army's horses".

It is from Gordon K Weddle that there were no children by William and Rebecca Malcomb. She did however have children from her first marriage 1-3 unknown at this time. It is possible that Malcomb was her first husbands name and Forcan was her maiden name. So her children will probably be Malcombs.

Children of WILLIAM WHITSITT and MARGARET MCGEE are:

i. JOHN WHITSITT, b. April 10, 1798, Montgomery Co., Ky.; d. February 24, 1855, Danville, Vermillion Co., Il.; m. MARY ANN BLANKENSHIP, May 30, 1816, Jefferson Co., In.; b. December 1800, N. C.; d. June 02, 1865.

Notes for JOHN WHITSITT: Per a Dana Hicks, Pawnee Oklahoma:  These WHITSITT'S spelled their names WHITESITT. Reasoning is yet unknown, yet I tend to believe that both could be correct. For John Whitsitt could have used both names. The families that followed, picked which one. Which I have seen happen often.

19. JOSEPH WHITSITT (SAMUEL VARNER5 WHITSETT, WILLIAM THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born 1774 in Pennsylvania, and died February 24, 1824 in Gibson County, Indiana. He married (1) REBECCA STEWART December 20, 1794 in Clark Co., Ky. She was born Abt. 1778, and died 1825 in Montgomery Co., Ky. He married (2) MARY LEMASTERS Abt. 1806 in Gibson County, Indiana. She died 1824.

Notes for JOSEPH WHITSITT: Son, Samuel Whitsitt of Gibson County, Indiana wrote to his relatives in Lafayette County shortly after the death of his brother, James Stewart Whitsitt. He states in that letter that there were eight brothers and that he was the only one still living. He also mentions a sister Polly Summers of Lafayette County.  The letter dated 1860 has lead to much controversy in that the brothers did not add up to eight there were nine that Gerald Whitsett knows of. Kathy Whitsett wife of Gerald Whitsett received Joseph and Mary and their children from one Bob Whitesitt in Kirkwood, Missouri sent to her in 1991-1992. Bob had inherited it from his grandfather and then father.

Joseph and Rebecca divorced and Rebecca remained in Kentucky and Joseph remarried and moved to Gibson County, Indiana having another family.

Will of Rebecca Stewart Whitsett.  Children 1-3 names were supplied by Marty Helm Brunetti a desc. of Mary (Polly) Whitesides Summers.

No's. 2 & 3-indenture papers signed by Joseph Whitesides Whitsett.

Children in Joseph's WILL; Gibson Co. IN.- Princeton, In. Feb 9th, 1824,- Samuel, Benjamin, Joseph L., Isaac, Wife Mary; Daughters Margaret, Malissa, Rachel. (These are apparently children of Joseph's second marriage).

This is from Marty's sheet on; Joseph, was born around 1775, in either Lancaster or Westmoreland Co. PA. Joseph married twice and had children by both wives. He married to Rebecca Stewart on 20-Dec-1794 in Clark Co. Ky. Rebecca was born to Ezekiel Stewart & Rachel Garrison in Gloucester, New Jersey in 1778, Rebecca & Joseph had 6 children before they obtained a divorce. They may have had Stewart & Isaac in 1805 & 1807 before separating for good. Joseph is found in Clark Co., Ky. census in 1810 with one son and one daughter under 10 years age. In 1820 he is found in Gibson Co. IN. with 4 sons and 3 daughters. Joseph's second wife was a Mary DeMasters or LeMasters. This was apparently was her previous married name, and possibly had a son from this marriage by the name of Simeon.

KENTUCKY BOOK OF WILLS:
WHITSELL, Rebecca-Montgomery Co.-KY-097-Book C-1822
**********************************************************************

The 1810 census of Montgomery County, Kentucky lists a Rebecca Whitesides and three children under the age of ten. In her will, probated in 1825, she names her three children: Stewart, Isaac, and Polly Summers. This would indicate that the two boys were born after 1805. Descendants of Polly Summers provided Mrs. Pauline Maciejewski with the names of John through Polly; however, their sources are not known.

Information per Kathy Whitsett: Polly was Joseph and Rebecca's daughter. Mary Polly Whitsett. She went by polly. #2, Rebecca never remarried after she and Joseph divorced. Mary Polly Whitsett their daughter married to a Caleb Summer and they removed to Mo.

Marriage Notes for JOSEPH WHITSITT and REBECCA STEWART: The Clark County marriage bond names James Whiteside and Rebecca Stewart. It seems clear, that Joseph was the husband of Rebecca Stewart. Perhaps his full name was Joseph James Whitsett, or James Joseph and he preferred to be called Joseph, or just named James Whitsitt and had a nick name for "Joseph".

In April , 1803 Joseph Whitesitt (sic) placed a notice in the Kentucky Gazette (published in Lexington) that his wife Rebecca had left him and he would not pay her bills. After April 1803 Joseph divorced Rebecca. Joseph remarried around 1806 to Mary LeMasters.

Notes for MARY LEMASTERS: Mary Lemasters maiden name is unknown, She was married to a Mr. Lemasters before marrying Joseph Whitsitt.

Marriage Notes for JOSEPH WHITSITT and MARY LEMASTERS:  It is very possible that Joseph and Mary only enjoyed their marriage for a few short months before Joseph's death which was probably and unfortunately in the same year they were married.

Children of JOSEPH WHITSITT and REBECCA STEWART are:

i. JOHN W. WHITESIDES, b. 1795, Clark Co, Kentucky; d. 1825, Lafayette Co., Mo.; m. UNITY FIELDER; d. Deceased.

Notes for JOHN W. WHITESIDES: Per Kathy Whitsett he died in 1849. !Lived 54 years. John W. Whitsett died under Guardianship bonds. Guardian& curator was brother James S. (Bond dated July 1851) - Phyllis Melton History.  Children's names came from Melton Fam. Hist.   Unsure where wife's name came from. It did come from another source.

ii. JAMES STEWART WHITSETT, b. October 22, 1797, Clark Co, Kentucky, /Montgomery Co, Kentucky; d. November 10, 1860, Lafayette Co., MO.

Notes for JAMES STEWART WHITSETT: Was suppose to have married to?????, but married on 10-Nov-1814. in Madison Co., KY.  Lived 63 years. Do not have any further on any descendants.

According Kathy Whitsett, his name was whitesides not Whitsitt.

Samuel Whitsitt of Gibson COunty, Indiana wrote to his relatives in Lafayette County shortly after the death of his brother, James Stewart Whitsitt. He states in that letter that there were eight brothers and that he was the only one still living. He also mentions a sister Polly Summers of Lafayette County.

iii. LEVI WHITSETT, b. 1800, Clark Co, Kentucky; d. Deceased; m. (1) SALLY STRANGE, December 05, 1822, Mont. Co., Ky.; b. Ky.; m. (2) ELIZABETH STONE, July 22, 1850.

Notes for LEVI WHITSETT:  Have a History written on Levi and his desc. sent to me by Phyliss Whitsett and Kathy, in 1989. In that history it says that one source says that Levi had sons Jeremiah, Barker, Henry & dau. Mary.

from the history sent by Phyliss Whitsett: Levi Whitsett born about 1800 Married first to Sally Strange on5-Dec-1822, in Montgomery Co. KY; she was born in Ky. Married second to; Elizabeth Stone, on 29-July-1850 Lafayette Co. MO. born about 1812 in KY.  Levi listed as head of the household Lafayette Co. Mo. 1830 census and on Tax Rolls. He served on Grand Jury of Johnson Co. Mo. 1835 through 1837. The first Grand Jury 5-Aug-1835. The Jury assembled under a tree and gravely listening to some minor cases brought them for consideration. They reported to the court it was not worth while to kick up a fuss over such trivial matters and according found no indictments. ( From History of Johnson Co. 1881).  Johnson Co. was formed from a part of Lafayette Co. 1835. Jackson Co. from Lafayette. Levi Whitsett and brothers and sister were in Lafayette County, Johnson and Jackson Cos. 1830 and after.

Notes for ELIZABETH STONE: !I think, that the children LINVILLE living with them in 1850 MO. were hers from previous marriage.

iv. SAMUEL WHITSITT, b. Abt. 1802, Clark Co, Kentucky.

Notes for SAMUEL WHITSITT: Son, Samuel Whitsitt of Gibson County, Indiana wrote to his relatives in Lafayette County shortly after the death of his brother, James Stewart Whitsitt.
