Samuel Whitsett
(JohnA,
WilliamB, SamuelC)
was born Abt. 1752 in Virginia (?), and died Abt.
1832 in Orange Co., North Carolina. He married
Mary Stockard
Abt. 1775. She was born 1760, and died 1830.
The ancestry of Samuel
Whitsett (John, William, Samuel) is at this time mostly speculation.
Dr. William Thornton Whitsett claimed that Samuel's parents were
Henry Whitsett and Jane Mebane. He claimed that brothers
Henry and Adam Whitsett, sons of William Whitsett and Elizabeth
Dawson came to North Carolina from Pennsylvania or Virginia.
I have found no evidence to support his conclusion. There
were two German immigrant brothers, Henry and Adam Whitsell (Weitzel)
who settled in that part of Orange County that is today Guilford
County, North Carolina. In the early hand-written records
of Orange County it is sometimes very hard to distinguish between
the name "Whitsett" and "Whitsell" and that
difficulty may be the basis for the confusion between Henry Whitsett
and Henry Whitsell. I have found much documentation for
the existence of Henry and Adam Whitsell but only questionable
evidence for the existence of Henry Whitsett. There is fairly
good evidence of the existence of an Adam Whitsett in Orange County
before, during and after the Revolutionary War but nothing to
identify his kin or descendants.
Most
of the information on Samuel comes from the
papers of Dr. William Thornton Whitsett. Few
sources are documented in his papers. There
are apparently no documents still in existence
that show Samuel's parentage, the name of
his spouse or the names of his children. I
have shown here Dr. Whitsett's information
although I'm not confident of its accuracy.
I have found no evidence that gives the name
of Mary Stockard or the fact she was the wife
of Samuel Whitsett of Orange Co., North Carolina.
That information is only found in Dr. William
Thornton Whitsett's papers. The only source
for the names of Samuel's children is Dr.
William Thornton Whitsett. My research indicates
that Dr. Whitsett obtained his information
on his great great grandfather from his Uncle
Alfred.

vote. Other names are: Joseph Hart; Samuel Hart; James Mebane;

William Whitsett (Samuel1,
JohnA, WilliamB,
SamuelC) was born 1780 in
North Carolina, and died Bef. 1860 in Memphis,
Tennessee. He married Jean
Harden August 15, 1805 in Orange
County, North Carolina, daughter of John
Harden and Sarah
Holt. She was born Abt. 1788 in North Carolina,
and died in Memphis, Tennessee.
William
Whitsett was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister.
He removed along with his wife and family
from North Carolina to Tennessee (where probably
he was ordained) and then to Lauderdale County,
Alabama. In about 1829 he left Alabama to
establish a church in Memphis, Tennessee.
He spent the rest of his life in Memphis.
He died before 1860. Only one daughter and
William’s wife Jean survived into the
1860’s. Some have thought that William
was the father of the Whitsett brothers who
lived and raised families in Lauderdale County
but there is strong evidence that this is
not so.
Records
of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Memphis
Theological Seminary Library, extracted by
Hinkley Smartt of Memphis, Tenn., (1981);
Rev. William Whitsett was a member of the
Cumberland Synod between 1813-1828; member
of Elk Presbytery in 1820 and transferred
to Tennessee Presbytery when it was formed
from part of Elk. After 1828 the records are
insufficient to provide any information.

"THE CUMBERLANDS – In 1829,
I think the Rev. William Whitsett, of
the Cumberland Church, came here [Memphis]
and established a church of that denomination.
Owing to the smallness of the membership
he was rather unsuccessful for a time.
His widow, at the extreme age of eighty-eight,
still survives, with a strength of body,
mind, hearing and voice that is truly
remarkable. Of the large family they raised,
but one daughter is now living –
Mrs. Eliza Whitsett, wife and cousin of
Wiley W. Whitsett, of whom few men of
his day were more generally known and
respected. Of their large family of children
not one now survives."

in Orange County, North Carolina, daughter of
James Bird and Rebeccah
Thompson. She was born Abt. 1803 in Rockingham
County, North Carolina, and died May 26, 1882
in Probably Forsyth County, Georgia. After the
death of Moses, Nancy married William
H. Ray, February 20, 1836.
Dr.
William Thornton Whitsett indicates that Moses
Whitsett was the son of Samuel and Mary Stockard
Whitsett. That seems strange if he moved to
North Carolina in 1824 as mentioned below.
However, Moses is named in the will of Isaac
McAddams. Isaac McAddams married Peggy [Margaret]
Whitesides in Orange County on Dec. 15, 1800.
