Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM WHITESIDE was born Abt. 1765 in Probably North Carolina or Virginia, and died Aft. 1830 in Possibly Giles County, Tennessee.

I speculate that William Whiteside was the father of Adam Whitsett (Whiteside). This is based on the family tradition expressed by Jesse James Whitsett to his nephew that the Lauderdale County, Alabama family came to Alabama from Giles County, Tennessee. The only record of any Whiteside or Whitsett family in Giles County is on the 1830 Census. William Whiteside is listed as a male between 60 and 70 years of age. In the household are two boys of the right age to be the orphan sons of Adam Whitsett, Joseph (Josiah) and John. These two boys are not in the household of Benjamin Price in Lauderdale County on the 1830 census of Lauderdale County. John was Jesse James Whitsett's father. I believe the Giles County tradition comes from the fact that John and Joseph were raised, at least partially, in Giles County. If so, it was most likely by a relative. Since this is all speculation we cannot make the statement, "William Whiteside was Adam Whitsett's father." But, it is an important clue and I place him in this family tree merely as a possibility.

1820 Census, Maury County, Tennessee, page 26
William Whitsitt, 2 males under 10; 1 male 26-45; 2 fems. Under 10, 2 fems. 10-16, 1 fem. 26-45; (no slaves or free colored)

1830 Census, Western Division, Giles County, Tennessee, pg. 172
Wm. Whiteside 1 male 5-10; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 60-70; 1 female 20-30; 1 female 40-50

In 1830, John born about 1821 would have been 9; Joseph born about 1814 would have been about 15 or 16

Possible child of WILLIAM WHITESIDE is:

2. i. ADAM WHITSETT, d. February 17, 1825, Lauderdale Co., Ala..

Generation No. 2

2. ADAM WHITSETT (WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) died February 17, 1825 in Lauderdale Co., Ala..

Nothing is known for certain about Adam Whitsett except that he died in Lauderdale County in February 1825. His estate was appraised by Dan Williams, Justice of the Peace, Simon Williams, James Bury, Sr. and John Martin. His estate was sold at auction in April 1825 and among those who purchased items were Wilson Whitsett and Benjamin Price (probably the father of Elizabeth Price, future wife of Wilson). Adam was certainly related to Wilson and Isaac Whitsett; but, there is no definitive evidence to tell us that he was in fact their father. The names of the buyers at the estate sale seem to indicate that Adam lived and died in the vicinity of Waterloo where the Whitsett brothers lived.

I have attached information on the Adam Whitsett of Orange Co., N. C. as a matter of convenience, not because I can document a relationship. There is some evidence that the Lauderdale County Whitsett family originated in North Carolina. They may have came to what is now middle Tennessee probably around 1810. There is an Adam Whitesides listed on the 1820 Census in Maury County, Tennessee.

1820 Census, Maury County, Tennessee, pg. 58
Addam Whiteside 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45 or over
2 fem. under 10, 1 fem. 10-16, 1 fem. 16-26

In the column on this census page that is supposed to be for Foreigners not naturalized is listed 2; however, I suspect that this column does not follow the intended 1820 form as every line on this census page has an entry in this column. The column is probably the number of males in the household engaged in agriculture.

4. ISAAC WHITSETT (ADAM2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born Abt. 1812 in Tennessee, and died June 14, 1865 in Lauderdale Co., Alabama. He married ELIZABETH WILSON July 20, 1837 in Lauderdale Co., Alabama, daughter of JAMES W. WILSON. She was born Abt. 1816 in Tennessee, and died Bef. 1870 in Probably Lauderdale Co., Ala.

The 1840, 1850 and 1860 slave schedules of the U.S. census show Isaac as a slave owner with two to five slaves in the household.

This family must have had great tragedy in their lives. The oldest son William was killed probably by Yankee soldiers during the Civil War while home of leave from the army. Of the seven children in the family only Phillip and Owen were still alive in 1865.  Phillip was dead by 1870 and Owen apparently shortly after 1870.  The only surviving member of the family by 1880 was Isaac's only grandson, William Isaac Whitsett, son of William.

Isaac died intestate. The estate records list Elizabeth Whitsett, widow, P. W. Whitsett and Owen Whitsett, children of Isaac and Isaac, son of W. W. Whitsett deceased and grandson of Isaac as heirs to the estate.

Children of ISAAC WHITSETT and ELIZABETH WILSON are:

13. WILLIAM WALLACE WHITSETT, b. Abt. 1836, Lauderdale Co., Alabama; d. Abt. 1865, Wright, Lauderdale Co., Alabama.

JAMES WHITSETT, b. 1838.  Notes for JAMES WHITSETT: Only appears on the 1850 census

PHILIP W. WHITSETT, b. 1840, Alabama; d. Bet. 1866 - 1868, Probably Lauderdale County, Alabama.

Confederate Army records list Philip as a private, Co. D, 4th Alabama Infantry. Philip was a private of the 9th Regiment, Alabama Infantry when he was listed as deserted in 1864 (he was captured by Federal troops possibly while attempting to return home). He was held in a POW camp near Nashville, Tenn. U.S. Army records describe him as fair complexion, brown hair, gray eyes, height 5'9". His place of residence Lauderdale Co., Alabama.  The Ninth Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Richmond, Virginia, the latter part of May 1861, and moved to Winchester several weeks later. It was there brigaded under Gen. Kirby Smith of Florida, but failed to reach the battlefield of Manassas because of a railroad accident. The regiment lay at Manassas Centerville till March 1862, when it marched to Yorktown. Gen. J. H. Forney of Calhoun succeeded to the command of the brigade, and was relieved by Gen. Wilcox in January, 1863. The regiment was under fire at Yorktown, with slight loss. It participated in the battle of Williamsburg, but the loss was not severe. At Seven Pines it was held in reserve, and did not suffer. It was now brigaded with the Eighth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Fourteenth Alabama regiments, still under Gen. Wilcox. At Gaines' Mill the regiment sustained severe loss, and was rent and torn by the wall of fire at Frazier's Farm. With the army it took up the line of March for Maryland, and was under fire but not actively engaged at the second Manassas. It was part of the investing force at Harper's Ferry, and hastened from there to the field of Sharpsburg, where it lost 8 killed, 42 wounded, and 9 missing. The Ninth wintered on the Rappahannock, and was under fire, with few casualties, at Fredericksburg. Its brightest renown was won at Salem, where it bore the brunt of a successful assault, and lost very heavily. The regiment moved into Pennsylvania, and sustained severe loss at Gettysburg, where the brigade had 781 killed and wounded. The fall and winter were passed in camp, near Orange C. H. [Court House?], and the Ninth participated in the fierce struggles at the Wilderness, and at Appomattox, with severe loss in each battle. Gen. Sanders of Greene then took command of the brigade. The fighting was almost continuous for several weeks, culminating in the terrible repulse of the invading army at the second battle of Cold Harbor, in which the Ninth shared without severe loss. From June till the end - nine weary months - the regiment was in the trenches of Petersburg, or engaged in the majority of the numerous and bloody battles that relieved the monotony of the last, long, and desperate collision of the great rival armies that had so long struggled on Virginia soil. A remnant of the Ninth surrendered at Appomattox, the brigade having been in command of Gen.W.H. Forney of Calhoun for some months. Of 1138 men on its rolls, about 200 fell in battle, over 175 died of disease and 208 were discharged or transferred. (Alabama Department of Archives & History, 624 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36130)

P . W. Whitsett petitioned the probate court to be appointed administrator of his father's estate on Oct. 23, 1865. His petition names himself and Owen as sons, and William Isaac Whitsett as grandson of Isaac (see notes for Isaac Whitsett). Lauderdale County, Alabama Estate Records, Probate Court Minutes Book C, pg. 385; Inventory Book D, pg. 659; Inventory Book E, pg. 63, Oct. 23, 1865; Nov. 25, 1865; May 7, 1866.

By 1870 Philip has died and Mary Ann [Whitsett] Terry petitions the court for the accounting of the estate of Isaac Whitsett, Sr.

Lauderdale County, Alabama Estate Records, Inventory Book F, pp. 242, 252, 294, 583, 595, Listed under Phillip W. Whitsett. None of these sources were extracted by my Lauderdale County researcher in 1980. They probably relate to the estate of Phillip.

5. JOSIAH (JOE) M. WHITSETT (ADAM2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born Abt. 1814 in Tennessee, and died Bef. 1891 in Probably Lauderdale County, Alabama. He married (1) KIZZIAH. She was born Abt. 1814 in Tennessee. He married (2) MARGARET ANN GRACEY March 20, 1881 in Lauderdale County, Alabama. She was born June 1845 in Tennessee, and died Aft. 1910 in Probably Lauderdale County, Alabama.

Joseph and Josiah Whitsett may be the same person. According to family tradition there were only four brothers in Lauderdale Co., Wilson, Isaac, Joseph (Joe) and John. Joseph was appointed guardian of [William] Isaac Whitsett, Jr. Josiah appears in the court records as guardian.

Josiah first appears in the records of Lauderdale County on the 1860 census. Residing in the dwelling listed immediately before Josiah's is John W. Whitsett and family (an indication that the two were related, probably father and son). The next record of Josiah is the 1870 census. On this document he is listed as J. M. Whitsett, the same initials he used when he signed the Isaac Whitsett, Sr. estate documents related to Isaac Whitsett, Jr. Joseph Whitsett and Kizziah Whitsett, age 60 are also on the 1870 census which begs the question, are Josiah and Joseph two different people or one and the same.

Witherspoon's final settlement of the Estate of Isaac Whitsett, dec'd to Josiah M. Whitsett in the amount of $1081.62 of which $305 is unaccounted for. Signed J. M. Whitsett. [same signature on the guardian ad litum document]. Lines for Billy Hopson for boarding [Isaac Jr.] Geo. Waters for tuition and a note transferred to Wilson Whitsett.

1850 - No Joseph, Josiah or J. M. Whitsett/Whitsitt/Whiteside born in Tennessee, North Carolina or Arkansas of the age between 30-40 is on the 1850 census in any state. This census has been extensively indexed by several systems, the most recent being Ancestry.com.  Joseph may have been in a territory of the U.S. not surveyed by the census. In 1850 many males had left their homes in the U.S. for the California gold fields.  As far as I know, there is no list of the "Forty-niners."

Notes for MARGARET ANN GRACEY: Maiden name is unknown. Mother of four children, three living in 1910. Only two are known. Censuses prior to 1910 give Margaret's place of birth as Tennessee, but the 1910 gives it as Mississippi. Married Joseph Whitsett after 1880 and son William Gracey took the name Whitsett. Married Ephraim Long 1891. Listed as a widow on 1900 census.  I believe I have found Margaret, age 25, b. in Tenn., on the 1870 Census in Tishomingo Co., Mississippi in the household of Eli Gracy, age 45, b. Tenn.  In 1870 there were no children in the household.

6. JOHN WHITSETT (ADAM2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born Abt. 1821 in Tennessee, and died Abt. 1855 in probably Phillips County, Arkansas. He married CYNTHIA MARY ANN TANKERSLEY Abt. 1848 in Possibly Phillips County, Arkansas, daughter of ROWLAND TANKERSLEY and MARGARET DAVIDSON. She was born April 28, 1824 in Alabama, and died February 26, 1900 in Lauderdale Co., Ala..

Much supporting information on the Lauderdale County, Alabama Whitsett's was derived from a letter dated November 17, 1929 from Jessie James Whitsett of Durant, Oklahoma to his nephew James Edward Whitsett, Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. Jessie James Whitsett was the son of John Whitsett.  Maida Whitten, who supplied me with a copy of this letter, is descended from nephew James Edward.

Letter from James Edward Whitsett to H. G. Whitsett of Florida.
Nov. 14th, 1929
Mr. H. G. Whitsett,
1013 Orange,
Eustis, Florida.
Dear Sir:
Your letter of Nov. 11th was written from Brevard, North Carolina, but I am addressing you at Eustis, Florida, as I see that in your letter you state that you spend your winters there.
I am sorry to say that I cannot give you very much information about the Whitsett family. My Father's name was Joseph Wilson Whitsett and his Father was John Whitsett, My Father was reared in North Alabama, near Waterloo, Lauderdale County, and his Father was left an orphan at an early age and I think there were four of the boys. Their names were Joseph, John, Wilson and Isaac. I think the Whitsett family was from Virginia or North Carolina to Tennessee and from Tennessee to Alabama and there is still quite a few Whitsett's around Waterloo, Alabama. My Father's Father married Cynthia Ann Tankersley and there were three boys, Joseph Wilson, Jesse James and John. John died when he was about 8 or 9 years old. My Father, Joseph Wilson Whitsett was born May 19th, 1854, and died Jan. 15th, 1925, and my uncle, James Whitsett, is still living at Durant, Oklahoma.
I am sure that we are of some relation if I could trace my descendants. My people have always claimed to be of Scotch Irish descent and Whitsett is a name that you seldom meet. I have a letter from Dr. William Thornton Whitsett of Whitsett, North Carolina, in which he states that he is writing a history of the Whitsett family. Possibly you are acquainted with him and more than likely he is some relation of yours.
I would be glad to hear from you again and write me in detail all you know of the Whitsett family. I am anxious to find out all I can about them.
Hoping you have a pleasant winter, I am
Yours truly,
J. E. Whitsett

8. CAMILLA MINERVA WHITSETT (WILSON W.3, ADAM2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born Abt. 1838 in Lauderdale Co., AL, and died 1884 in Salem, Greene County, Arkansas. She married JOHN HARVEY ROUSSAEU January 13, 1857 in Lauderdale County, Alabama. He was born Abt. 1828 in Bordeaux, France, and died 1879 in Walcott, [Salem] Greene County, Arkansas.

[Camilla Minerva Whitsett] "Cammie, or Cam, Whitsett was a small woman--not over 5 feet, 3 inches--with a short oval face and a fair complexion. She had blue eyes, a small straight nose and dark hair - probably auburn. Cammie was born in 1840, one of the eleven children of Elizabeth B. Price and Wilson Whitsett, who were married in 1830 in Lauderdale County where they lived the rest of their lives." ROUSSEAU BIOGRAPHIES, Inez Jane Dennis, Copyright 1965; (provided by Maida Whitten).

Camilla recalled her father buying her mother a claybank horse (a horse with a white tail and mane and golden body) and described how pretty her mother looked riding the horse. After Camilla's mother died around 1869 her father would allow no one but himself to ride the horse. ROUSSEAU BIOGRAPHIES, Inez Jane Dennis, Copyright 1965.

"The remaining sisters and one of the brothers [of Camilla Whitsett Rousseau] were married. One sister, Sally Webb, lived in Greene County at Lorado; one, Kate Williams, had moved to Texas and the other, harriett Young, was still in Alabama. The married brother, Isaac Jones, ran a saw and grist mill in White County, Arkansas, two counties southwest of Greene. The single brother, Willie Shanner, stayed in Greene County with Cam for several long periods then went to Texas, and from there back to Alabama." Notes for JOHN HARVEY ROUSSAEU:  "John Harvey Rousseau was born around 1828 in Bordeaux, France. he emigrated to this country, arriving in Virginia at the age of seventeen, accompanied by an older brother whom he called Sandy. By 1856 Harvey had settled in Lauderdale County, Alabama at Waterloo, a thriving center of river shipping on the Tennessee River. He was a carpenter by trade and made his own tools out of iron and wood. On January 20, 1857 he was married in Lauderdale County to Camilla Minerva Whitsett."   ROUSSEAU BIOGRAPHIES, Inez Jane Dennis, Copyright 1965; (provided by Maida Whitten).

"In 1879 Harvey made a trip to Greene County, Arkansas where he rented the old Gates farm near the little village of Walcott." ... "After Harvey had fixed up the house on the Gates farm he wrote to Alabama for his family; they took a train to Walnut Ridge in the neighboring county of Lawrence where he met them. Two days later Harvey Rousseau was dead of pneumonia. He is buried at the old Mt. Zion Cemetery, a mile and a half southwest of Walcott. [Daughter] Kate died presently in the same year and is buried next to her father."

Notes for MARY ANN HOPSON:
Lauderdale County, Alabama Estate Records, Probate Minute Book E, pg. 4, Sept. 27, 1870 [photo copy of original document]: "This day came Mary Ann Terry and asked this Court to grant her letters of Guardianship upon the Estate of Isaac Whitsett and it appearing to the Court that said Mary Ann Terry is a fit and proper person to act as such guardian It is ordered by the Court that said Mary Ann Terry be and she is hereby appointed Guardian of said Isaac Whitsett Jr. The said Mary Ann Terry then tendered her bond conditioned as the law directs in the penal sum of one hundred dollars with O. B. Sullivan, P. H. Cunningham and H. Richardson as securities which bond being deemed good and sufficient is hereby approved and ordered to be filed and recorded. It is further [intend] that letters of Guardianship issue to said Mary Ann Terry."

Lauderdale County, Alabama Estate Records, Probate Minute Book E, pp. 15-16, Nov. 17, 1870 [photo copies of original documents], legal documents pertaining to the guardianship of Isaac Whitsett Jr. by Mary Ann Terry.

In the 1880 census, Mary's father William has a grandson 'Isich Whitsett' age 20, living in his household. In 1870 Mary Ann Terry initiated court action for the administrators of Isaac Whitsett and Philip Whitsett estates to file accounts of the two estates for the benefit of William Isaac Whitsett (her son). Philip, who was the administrator of his father's (Isaac Whitsett Sr.) estate has died. I have photo copies of these documents. After these documents were made in November 1870 Mary Ann disappears from the records in Lauderdale Co. Guardianship of her son passes from her to Joseph Whitsett and Josiah M. Whitsett (may be the same person) who was guardian when William Isaac turned 21 in 1880.

Nelda Cooper, William Cooper Family, (neldac@pernet.net), provided me with some information on the Hopson family and Mary Ann, daughter of William Hopson.

Yours truly,
J. E. Whitsett

Mr. J. E. Whitsett
Dear Nephew:
Got your letter yesterday. Glad to hear from you. Your Grandfather, John Whitsett, the youngest of four brothers and two sisters. Wilson Whitsett, the oldest; Isaac Whitsett, the second. Joe Whitsett, the third and John Whitsett the fourth and youngest, born in 1828. Do not know any dates. Their Father and Mother came from Virginia to Jiles County, Tennessee, and died there when the children were small and no dates were kept of anything. They were all adopted by one man and wife, a Mr. Ben Price, brought to Lauderdale County, Alabama, and raised there and lived and died there around Waterloo, except Father. He died in Pope County, Arkansas, when I was 6 years old. Your Father was 6 months old. There was one Brother, the oldest one never adopted, he being old enough to take care of himself, and went to Georgia and raised up a family of boys there, all being rail-road men. I saw a man who knew them after they were all middle aged men.
Jim, this is all I know about our direct people. Doctor Whitsett, of Fort Worth, has a biography of the Whitsett's, 330 years old. If he is still living, he is 55 or 60 years old. Please give me the outcome of this.
Your effectionate uncle
J.J.W. [typed as I. I. W.]

A note from Maida Whitten says, "Ron - I believe Uncle Jim had his secretary transcribe a handwritten letter & that is the reason for the "I. I." instead of "J. J."
The Doctor that Mr. Whitsett mentions in his letter was probably Lee M. Whitsett of Fort Worth, Texas (age 68 in 1930) originally from Georgia.

The letter says, "Your grandfather, John Whitsett, the youngest of four brothers and two sisters. Wilson Whitsett, the oldest, Isaac Whitsett, the second, Joe Whitsett, the third and John Whitsett, the fourth and youngest, born in 1828. Do not know any dates. Their Farther and Mother came from Virginia to Jiles [Giles] County, Tennessee, and died there when the children were small and no dates were kept of anything. They were all adopted by one man and wife, a Mr. Ben Price, brought to Lauderdale County, Alabama, and raised there and lived and died there around Waterloo, except Father. He died in Pope County, Arkansas, when I was 6 years old. Your Father was 6 months old. There was one Brother, the oldest one never adopted, he being old enough to take care of himself and went to Georgia and raised up a family of boys there, all being railroad men. I saw a man who knew them after they were all middle aged men."
"Jim, this is all I know about our direct people. Doctor Whitsett, of Fort Worth, has a biography of the Whitsett's, 330 years old. If he is still living, he is 55 or 60 years old. Please give me the outcome of this."
"Your effectionate uncle,
J. J. W."

21. WILLIAM ISAAC WHITSETT (WILLIAM WALLACE4, ISAAC3, ADAM2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born September 11, 1859 in Lauderdale Co., Alabama, and died December 7, 1927 in Jasper Twp., Crawford Co., Arkansas. He married FANNIE BELLE MCDANIEL October 26, 1880 in Lauderdale, Co., Alabama, daughter of JAMES MCDANIEL. She was born November 1859 in Mississippi, and died July 18, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan.

Interview with Clifford C. Whitsett and Clifford's son Willard in 1979: William Isaac Whitsett died in Fort Smith on December 7, 1927. He moved to Huntington, Arkansas from Mississippi about 1895 and then to Mena, Arkansas when Clifford was about one year old. William Isaac was raised as an orphan and was kept from inheriting his father's estate by relatives. About 1927 or 1928 Clifford moved to Detroit to find work in an auto plant. He took his mother Fannie with him. She died in Detroit on July 18, 1943 or 1944.

There are numerous court records in Lauderdale County pertaining to the estate of Isaac Whitsett (grandfather of William Isaac) and the guardianship of William Isaac. By September 1870 William Isaac is the only living heir of Isaac Sr.

32. JAMES EDWARD WHITSETT (JOSEPH WILSON4, JOHN3, ADAM2, WILLIAM1 WHITESIDE) was born July 3, 1879 in Waterloo, Lauderdale County, Alabama, and died April 25, 1967 in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. He married BELLE ZORA GUERRY December 21, 1902 in Parker County, Texas. She was born August 2, 1881 in Peaster, Parker County, Texas, and died October 25, 1958 in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas.

Much supporting information on the Lauderdale County, Alabama Whitsett's was derived from letters of November 1929 to and from James Edward Whitsett of Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. Copies of these letters were given to me by Maida Whitten, a niece of James.

Mr. J. E. Whitsett,
Dear Sir:
I notice in the paper that Mr. J. E. Whitsett was Foreman of the jury who tried R. H. Hamilton of your State a few days ago. Having had a letter only a few days ago from my Nephew, Dr. W. T. Whitsett, of Whitsett, N. C., who is getting up a history of the Whitsett Family, I could not help but think that perhaps you might help in that history, by giving a small outline of your Family in Texas.
I had a granduncle who was a preacher and left N. C. quite a number of years ago and settled at or near Mims, [Memphis] Tenn. His name was Wm. Whitsett. I did not know but what you might be of that family.
Do you know what your grandfather's name was. If you care to you might write Dr. W. T. Whitsett of Whitsett, N. C. and give him what you might have of the Family in Texas.
With good wishers, I am
Yours truly,.
A. T. Whitsett.

WHITSETT, N. C.

Mr. A. T. Whitsett,
Chapel Hill, N. C.

Dear Uncle Alfred, -
My history of the Whitsett family is drawing to a conclusion, and I hope to publish before many more months. It is hard to get all the information together.
Can you give me, or tell me where I can get a correct list of the dates of birth, and death where now dead, of the children of Austin Whitsett, your father, and my grandfather?
Also, what was name of woman Uncle Henry married? Also Uncle Jerry? Where are these two buried. Can you give their children's names, also to whom the children were married.
Help me all you can, please. Your help in past has been the best I have been able to obtain.
With regards to all the family,

Sincerely yours,

W. T. Whitsett.

Dear Sir:
I enclose you clipping from the Ashville, N. C. Citizen.
I am the youngest son of Ralph Crawford Whitsett and Rachel Dunn Whitsett of Va. My grandfather, Wm. Whitsett, fought in the Revolution, was under Col. Crawford and married Col. Crawford's niece, Hadessa.
I am of Scotch-Irish descent and all my forebears came from Va. Grandfather was born in 1752, Father in 1801, and self in 1852.
If you can figure out any relation I would be pleased to hear from you.
I have my winter home at Eustis, Fla. And leave for there last of this week. I would have been there but have been laid up for over a month with an infected right hand.
Yours truly,
H. G. Whitsett
P. S. My oldest Brother's name was James Estel Whitsett. I have one Brother, A. H. living at Mt. Ida and sister, M. H. Whitsett Hindron living in Dayto [sic] Wash. She is past 90.

Mr. H. G. Whitsett,
1013 Orange,
Eustis, Florida.
Yours truly,
J. E. Whitsett

Your letter of Nov. 24 received here. Owing to bad weather in mountains we did not get started here till the 19th and got here the 21st and it takes some time too get tying [sic] cleaned up after six months absence.
I am confident that we are some kind of kinfolks. I will give you our family tradition as I remember it. We are of Scotch Irish decent and are from Virginia. James - John and William Whitsett left Va. To go south and my Grandfather William stopped in Pa. And his two brothers went on south and grandfather never heard from either of them while he lived.
My grandfather William was born in 1752 and married Hadessa Crawford a niece of Col. William Crawford of Revolutionary fame.
Grandfather fought under Col. Crawford. Col. Crawford and grandfather lived at Connelsville Pa and the City have recently erected a monument to his memory. Grandfather William also lived at Layton Pa and Pittsburgh and Jacks Run Pa. Grandmother died and was buried at Layton Pa.
Grandfather and Grandmother had thirteen children. Twelve girls and one boy who was the youngest and my father born in 1801 and died at my house in 1892. My father and mother had thirteen children of which I am the youngest born May 31 1852. My mother was Rachel Estep a Daughter of Dr. James Estep a practiceing physitien [sic] and baptist preacher all his life. My grandmother was Rachel Dunn an F.F.V. of Va.
I have one brother A. H. Whitsett living at Mt. Ida Ark and a sister R Hadessa Whitsett Hendron living at Dayton Washington. She is past 90 and spry as a crickit.
My daughter Gertrude Whitsett Kipp is applying to get into the Daughters of the Revolution. Grandfathers service record under William Crawford in the state records at Philadelphia Pa. Are the same as our traditions. An old history of Fayette Co. Pa. By Nelson speaks of my grandfather as being a great indian fighter and scout and a friend of George Washington.
I was born in Fayette Co. Pa. Was in Ky. Six years and came to Fla. In 1890. Bought a summer home at Brevard N. C. six years ago. It is up in the mountains on the head of French Bread River.
Mountains around us run from 3000 to 6000 ft. The river is 2300.
I have tried to give you the high points of our familey and if you can connect up I will be much pleased.
If interested I can go into more detail. I do not think that there are very many living whose grandfather fought for our independence.
I have had some correspondence with William Thornton Whitsett of Whitsett N. C. but have not gone to see him yet. He lives over 200 miles from Brevard. If you should get near here do not fail to come to see me. Hoping that we may get better acquainted I remain
Very Truly Yours

Mr. J. E.

Whitsett of Fort Worth, Texas (age 68 in 1930) who was originally from Georgia.
