Children of Joseph WHITSITT and Rebecca STEWART are: (information is subject to change as I find more sources; sources of information on these children will be noted on their individual web pages)

22.

i. John W. WHITSITT, b. abt. 1795 in Kentucky.  At the moment I have little documentation to support facts about this John Whitsitt; family trees offered by various Whitsett researchers in Missouri claim he married (1) Unity FIELDER in Missouri or Indiana and give a list of children.  It is probably true, and seems supported by the will of John Fielder; married (2) Martha READ/REED, 08 September 1835, Lafayette County, Missouri (speculation).  The Land entry In Gibson County, Indiana of Aug. 18, 1819 - John Whitsett, T2S R10W W-NW-S3, proves his existence.  He relinquished the land in 1821 indicating that he probably removed to Lafayette County, Missouri about this time.  BLM Land records place him in Lafayette County, Missouri by June of 1827 and he appears on the 1830 and 1840 censuses in Lafayette County.

 __.

ii. Margaret WHITSITT POWELL, b. abt. 1796 according to some undocumented sources; supposedly married William POWELL in 1814 in Harrison County, Kentucky.  After extensive census searches between 1820 and 1860 in Kentucky, Indiana or Missouri, I have found no records of a Margaret (Whitsitt) or William Powell with the characteristics to allow me to identify this couple. Likewise, I can find no marriage record for a Margaret Whitsitt (of any spelling) and William Powell in Kentucky or Indiana.  The proof of Margaret's existence is her father's will made in 1824 and the 1860 letter written by her brother Samuel Whitsitt of Deputy, Indiana stating that she was alive and well in November, 1860.  Unfortunately, Samuel did not give her married name or any other details.  I feel that if she married William Powell, she must have remarried later, the reason I am unable to locate her on any census.

 23. iii. James Stewart WHITSITT, b. 22 October 1797, probably in Montgomery County, Kentucky (the 1860 census says Tennessee); d. 10 November 1860 in Washington Township, Lafayette County, Missouri; m. Sidney NOLAND (one source says Nov. 10, 1814 in Madison County, Kentucky, but this appears to be to early as Sidney would have only been thirteen years old).  James and Sidney settled first in Gibson County, Indiana and removed from Indiana to Lafayette County, Missouri between 1820-1830 (one biography says 1816, although this appears unlikely); a family source states that James and Sidney had nine sons and five daughters. A biography from a history of Lafayette County says the couple had twelve children (this seems a more likely number).  I can document thus far the names of daughter Nancy A. WHITSITT (married Samuel S. SHAW); daughter Burilla C. WHITSITT (may be the daughter identified by some as Drucilla; married a ROBINSON); son Thomas N. WHITSITT (served in the Mexican War) ; son Joseph Anderson WHITSITT; daughter Elizabeth WHITSITT (died at a young age); daughter Fidelia Atlanta WHITSITT (married a BARTON, died in 1869); son Upton WHITSITT (died at age 21). Other researchers have also identified Martin D. WHITSITT, William H. WHITSITT, Martha Jane WHITSITT and James L. WHITSITT.  I have not been able to find the family on the 1850 census or verify the latter as children of James and Sidney.

24.

iv.  Levi WHITSITT, b. abt. 1800, probably Montgomery County, Kentucky; according to one researcher, died in Lafayette County, Mo. before 1860; m. (1) Sally STRANGE, December 5, 1822, Montgomery County, Kentucky (b. bef. 1807, probably Kentucky, d. between 1840-1850 probably in Lafayette or Johnson County, Missouri; married (2) Elizabeth STONE (Mrs. Elizabeth SCOVILLE?), May 29, 1850, Lafayette County, Missouri.  According to the 1850 census and undocumented sources Levi had eight sons and five daughters.

__. v.  Mary "Polly" WHITSITT SUMMERS, b. May 31, 1802, Kentucky; d. April 12, 1869 (cemetery headstone); m. Caleb SUMMERS, July 5, 1818, Montgomery County, Kentucky (b. January 29, 1798, Kentucky, d. May 06, 1880, Washington Township, Lafayette Co., Missouri); removed from Kentucky to Lafayette County, Missouri in 1836; children according to the 1850 census, Lafayette County, Missouri and undocumented descendant family sources: John SUMMERS, b. abt. 1823, Ky.; Stewart SUMMERS, b. January 27, 1827, Montgomery County, Kentucky, m. Rachel REED; Cornelius SUMMERS, b. July 3,1834, Kentucky, d. September 18, 1862, served in the Missouri federal militia  and killed by Quantrill's Raiders after he was captured, m. Eliza BARKER; Isaac SUMMERS, b. abt. 1836, Missouri(?); Juliann SUMMERS, b. abt. 1840, Missouri(?); Louisa SUMMERS, b. abt. 1842, Missouri, m. Samuel A. STANFIELD; Dulsena Unity SUMMERS, b. December 12, 1843, d. February 07, 1844.

Children of Joseph WHITSITT and Mrs. Mary LEMASTERS are:

25.

vi. Samuel WHITSITT, b. 31 Aug. 1806, Montgomery County, Kentucky; d. 21 Jan. 1877, Gibson County, Indiana; m. (1) Jane FINNEY, 17 December 1828 in Gibson County, Indiana; m. (2) Nancy S. MACINTOSH, 15 January 1861, Gibson County, Indiana; m. (3) Sarah BOSWELL, 27 Sept. 1866, Gibson County. An important source of family information is the letter from Samuel to his nephew, Joseph A. Whitsitt, in Lafayette County, Missouri dated November, 1860.  Samuel is named as a son in Joseph Whitsitt's will of 1824 and appears as a witness on the 1838 will of his mother Mary.

26.

vii. Benjamin WHITSITT, b. abt. 1809, (Montgomery County) Kentucky; d. 05 December 1857, Gibson County, Indiana; m. Margaret BOSWELL, 29 Sept. 1831, Gibson County, Indiana.  Benjamin is mentioned in his father's will made in 1824 and as a witness to his mother's will in 1838.

27.

viii. Joseph L. WHITSITT, b. abt. 1810, Kentucky; undocumented family trees give his date of death as either 1842 or 1847, probably in Indiana.  One source states that his wife was Lydia DUNCAN Indiana marriage records show a marriage between "James" Whitsitt and Lydia Duncan on 16 October 1832 in Gibson County, Indiana.  It is likely that this marriage is actually Joseph, Jr.  This is the only record I have found for Joseph. No known descendants.  Joseph is mentioned in the will of his father in 1824.

28. ix. Isaac Newton WHITSITT, mentioned by name in the wills of his father Joseph Whitsitt, February 9, 1824 and his mother Mary Lemasters) Whitsitt October 19, 1838;  b. abt. 1803, Kentucky, d. after 1850 probably in Indiana; m. Priscilla DENNY (b. abt. 1810); some sources have listed Isaac Newton Whitsitt as the son of Samuel Whitsitt Jr. and Allie PHILLIPS (this is wrong, unless there were two Isaac Newton WHITSITT's in Indiana).
__. x. Rachel WHITSITT POTTER, b. abt 1814 in Kentucky, d. before 1860, probably in Indiana; m. March 22, 1827, in Gibson County, Indiana, Absolom POTTER (b. abt. 1805, South Carolina).  Known children all born in Indiana: Ruth POTTER, b. abt. 1828; Thomas POTTER, b. abt. 1836; John POTTER, b. abt 1839.  The last record of this family I can find is the 1850 census when they were living in Warrick County, Indiana.  Rachel is mentioned by name in her father's will.
__. xi. male WHITSITT, the 1820 census indicates three male children born between 1811 and 1820; I speculate one other boy born abt. 1816.    This would account for the eight brothers mentioned in the 1860 letter of Samuel Whitsitt of Gibson County.

__.

xii. Melissa WHITSITT FINNEY, b. abt 1818 (probably in Indiana) according to undocumented sources; m. Thomas FINNEY, in Gibson County, Indiana abt. 1835.  Thomas Finney is found on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Newburgh Township, Warrick County, Indiana (where Absolom and Rachel (Whitsitt) Potter are located in 1850); Lucinda, b. abt 1809 is the adult female in the household.  In 1880, Thomas is back in Gibson County living in Princeton with his brother John R. Finney; Melissa is not found on any of these censuses.  I assume she died shortly after her marriage to Thomas, perhaps in child birth.  Melissa is mentioned in her father's will made in 1824.

Children of Rebecca STEWART and unknown father are:

29.

i.  Isaac WHITSETT, b. abt. 1804 in Montgomery County, Kentucky, one year after Joseph and Rebecca had separated. According to the 1860 letter by Isaac's brother Samuel in Gibson County, Indiana, all of Samuel's seven brothers had died before he wrote the letter in November, 1860.  Isaac appears on the 1860 census in Jackson County and in Lafayette County in 1870.  This confirms for me that Isaac and Stewart, both sons of Rebecca (and mentioned in her will in 1825) were not the children of Joseph.  However, they and their descendants have carried the Whitsitt surname and are therefore a part of the Whitsitt family tree.  M. (1) Cynthia NOLAND, 29 April 1826, Madison Co., Kentucky; m. (2) Elizabeth.   Click on the link, Isaac WHITSETT, for this family's history.

30.  ii.  Stewart WHITSETT, b. abt. 1805, two years after Joseph and Rebecca had separated.  The November, 1860 letter from Joseph's son Samuel of Gibson County, Indiana stated that of eight brothers, he (Samuel) was the only one still living.  At the time Stewart and his family were living in Lafayette County, Missouri.  They were still there in 1870.  This confirms for me that Isaac and Stewart, both sons of Rebecca (and mentioned in her will in 1825) were not the children of Joseph.  However, they and their descendants have carried the Whitsitt surname and are therefore a part of the Whitsitt family tree.  Click on the link, Stewart WHITSETT, for this family's history.
