The Descendants of Zachariah Westfall of Virginia and West Virginia

There was disagreement among Westfall genealogists about the identity of Zachariah Westfall's father. Zachariah's grandson, Watson Westfall, is said to have named Jacob Westfall as the father. Authors of some of the county histories of West Virginia have claimed that Zachariah's father was James Westfall, supposedly one of the founders of the town of Beverly. While both of these claims are difficult to refute, the documentary evidence we have available to us today, support the conclusion that Zachariah's parents were Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall, son and niece of Abel Westfall and Ann Bogard. I do not believe we will ever positively, beyond a doubt, identify the parents. The conclusive evidence just does not seem to exist. Regardless of the identity of Zachariah's parents, we can still be certain that he was a descendant, no more than five generations from the Dutch immigrant ancestor Jurien Westfall from Liederdorp, Netherlands.

I firmly believe that Zachariah Westfall was the son of Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall from the Minisink village on the banks of the Delaware River in north western New Jersey. Zachariah was born on January 8, 1769 and baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church at Machackemeck, Orange County, New York on February 18, 1769. This is according to the baptismal records of the Dutch Reformed Church of New York. His parents brought him and his siblings to Augusta County, Virginia about 1771 when they settled on the South Branch of the Potomac River near where several other relatives from the Minisink in New Jersey had bought land in Virginia a decade before.

When he was twenty years old Zachariah gave up his claim to ninety-five acres purchased by cousin Jacob Westfall (October 28, 1789). The land was part of the original grant to his grandfather Abel Westfall more than thirty years earlier. This original grant was located on the South Branch of the Potomac. This description covers a lot of area; however the location of the Westfall land has been identified as being a few miles south of Morefield in today's Hardy County, West Virginia. This document does not give us any clue as to the location of Zachariah in 1789 but it is likely that he still resided in the area of his grandfather's original plantation.

Zachariah and his brothers, John, Cornelius and Isaac were our Westfall ancestors who settled in the area that became West Virginia. Brother Cornelius and his descendants (my ancestors) settled mostly in today's Lewis and Upshur counties. Isaac's sons were in Randolph and Harrison counties. Early in the nineteenth century, those counties included today’s Lewis and surrounding counties. I have not researched Isaac's line, therefore I cannot say if their eventual home places remained in West Virginia or not. The children of Zachariah and John seemed to, for the most part, ended up in today's Upshur, Lewis and Roane County. Eventually I hope to trace the lines of all the Westfall brothers in West Virginia up to the mid Twentieth Century.

I want to thank the researchers who helped me with the descendants of Zachariah Westfall (and his brother John through his son Stephen). I am changing from a simple tree format to the more flexible and informative format of the family group sheet. This format is also much easier to maintain when I find mistakes and omissions. 2. i. Andrew Westfall He was born on 17 Feb 1789 in Randolph County, (West) Virginia [11]. He married Mary Elizabeth Hyre on 11 Nov 1809 in Harrison County, Virginia. He died Aft. 1860

Susannah Westfall [11,12,13,17]. She was born Abt. 1790 in Randolph County, Virginia. She supposedly died in 1860, but I feel this date is unlikely; she probably died before 1823.  She married David Jonathan Casto on 20 Apr 1807 in Harrison County, Virginia [12,11,13,17].  I was unable to locate Susannah in any records after her marriage.  She apparently died before 1823 and David Casto remarried to Sarah Ward on 13 January 1823.[18]   Because I am unable to identify the children, if any, of Susannah and David, I have not researched this family any further.  It is notable that Andrew named his second child, daughter Susanna, born in 1811 after his sister.

Elizabeth Westfall She was born on 26 Jan 1791 in Beverly, Randolph County, Virginia. She married Jacob Cutright on 05 Feb 1813 in Harrison County, Virginia. She died on 04 Oct 1879 in Buckhannon, Upshur County, West Virginia (age 89, cause of death, "dibility")

George Westfall  He was born on 12 Apr 1796 in Westfall homestead, Randolph County, Virginia. He married (1) Lydia Cutright on 21 Oct 1816 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia; he married (2) Ruhama Cutright on 02 Nov. 1844.   He died on 11 Oct 1873 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia.

John S. Westfall He was born on 01 Nov 1800 in Randolph County, (West) Virginia. He married Elizabeth Queen on 28 Jun 1825 in Harrison County,Virginia. He died on 27 Jan 1876 in Meigs County, Ohio.
6. vi. Rutha Westfall was born Abt. 1805 in Harrison County, Virginia and died after the 1880 census was taken.  She married John Warner on 08 Apr 1822 in Lewis County, Virginia.  Rutha and husband appear on the 1880 census in the Hackers Creek District, Lewis County, West Virginia.

Clark Westfall  He was born Abt. 1807 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia. He married (1) Permilla Cutright on 15 Jan 1828 in Lewis County, Virginia; he married (2) Martha R. Teal (Teel) on 01 Aug 1847 in Jackson County, Virginia.  He died 1849 in Monroe County, Iowa.

Owen Westfall   He was born Abt. 1813 in Harrison County, (West) Virginia. He married (1) Elizabeth Watson on 25 Mar 1835 in Harrison County, Virginia; he married (2) Arena Forinash (sometimes Irene), 06 Sep. 1839 in Lewis County, Virginia.  He died after the 1880 census was taken.

Sarah Westfall was born Abt. 1816 in Harrison County, Virginia. She married Reason Queen on 01 Nov 1833 in Harrison County, Virginia. She supposedly died on 05 Apr 1844; however, she gave birth to son John Queen about 1848 and I expect that is the year of her death.  Reason Queen remarried to Elizabeth Romine in February 1853.
   
Hannah Westfall:  Several researchers have given Zachariah and Hannah another daughter named Hannah.  This may be because of an item in W. B. Cutright's History of Upshur County which names Hannah as one of the daughters.  Other researchers, including myself, have looked at the evidence and believe Hannah Westfall was the daughter of Joel Westfall, a contemporary of Zachariah  and Hannah.  The first indication that Hannah just does not fit in Zachariah's family is the probable date of her birth, which is the same as Rutha Westfall.  It is biologically possible to have two children who are not twins to be born in the same year, but it is highly unlikely.  As always is the case, if you have an interest in Hannah, or any other descendant, you should do your own research and verify the data.  You should also notice that there are some five and six year gaps in the birth dates of the children.  This is usually an indicator of children who did not survive to adulthood.  It would be odd if this were not the case in that era when simple childhood diseases were often fatal.

  1771 Cornelius Westfall reportedly brings his family to the South Fork of the Potomac in the West Augusta District of Virginia and settled somewhere near the town of today's Morefield, Hardy County, West Virginia. [4, 15]  Elizabeth, his wife died probably about this time and Cornelius married his sister-in-law, Eleanor Magdalene (Westfall) Davis (Davets).   Cornelius is her third husband.

"In the name of God Amen, I Cornelius Westfall of the County of Hampshire and the state of Virginia being very sick and weak but of perfect mind and memory ... do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament.. The Worldly Estate which it has pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give ... and dispose of in the following manner.. First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Magdalene Westfall, the privilege of one third of the benefit of my plantation I now dwell on as long as she shall bear the name she is now of. Also, I give and bequeath unto my son, Jacob Westfall, my smooth gun. Thirdly I give and bequeath unto my beloved sons, Isaac Westfall and Zachariah Westfall all my lands and [unreadable] an equal share with the rest of my children of the movable estate except such particulars as I shall hereafter mention. I do not mean for Isaac and Zachariah to hold the land without having it appraised and paying to such as shall be hereafter named in particularly such share of land. Fourth, I give and bequeath unto Jacob Westfall one fifth part of the value of the lands, and to Cornelius Westfall one fifth part of the value of the lands, and unto John Westfall one fifth part of the value of the lands, and my will is if my two sons, Cornelius and John, should not return that their part of the Estate shall fall to Isaac and Zachariah. I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Mary Westfall, a feather bed and furniture, a cow and a calf, her choice of my cattle, two ewes, her choice, and an equal share of the movable estate. Now my desire is to have the rest of the moveable estate appraised and let all my children have an equal part. I do constitute and appoint my friend, Samuel Hornback and my eldest son, Jacob, as my executors of this my Last Will and Testament. And on the motion of the said Executor, who made it according to law, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form, giving security. Where upon, he together with his Security entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of .... for his due and faithful Execution of the said Decedent's Estate and performance of his Will. Harrison County is formed from part of Monongalia which included most of today's northern half of West Virginia.

W. B. Cutright implies, in his 1907 book, The History of Upshur County, pg. 186, that Zachariah settled on Stony Run, two miles below Buckhannon, in 1772.  Since Zachariah would have three years old that year this seems very unlikely.  He may have actually acquired the land as early as 1785 since he began paying personal property tax that year when he was only 16.[1,4,11]
EARLY SETTLERS AND INDIAN TROUBLES - "... Thomas Carney, Zachariah Westfall and George Casto built their homes on Stony run about two miles south of Buckhannon. Joel Westfall on the river north of them and opposite the mouth of Ratcliffe's run; Abraham Carper still lower down on the land now known as the Boom or South Buckhannon; Jacob Brake built his cabin north of the mouth of Fink's run, now in the limits of North Buckhannon."

  1785 Zachariah paid personal property tax in Harrison County when he became 16 years old. [4, 11]

Zachariah married Hannah Wolfe in Randolph County on Jan 2, 1788. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Christina Wolfe and the sister of Margaret Wolfe who married Zachariah's brother John Westfall. [5, 13]  Zachariah is nineteen years-old.

Kanawha County is formed; it includes land now in Mason (formed in 1804), Cabell (formed 1809), part of Nicholas (formed 1818), Logan (formed 1824), Fayette (1831), Jackson (1831), Braxton (1836) and parts of others.  It was made of most of the south western counties of West Virginia.
  1789 Randolph Co. tax lists show Zachariah was taxed as over 21 in 1789. [4]

"INDENTURE, ZACHARIAH WESTFALL TO JACOB WESTFALL JR., 28 Oct. 1789: 
"This indenture of agreement made this twenty-eighth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand, seven hundred and eighty nine, Witnesseth that I, Zachariah Westfall of the County of Randolph and the State of Virginia for and in the consideration of the sum of forty pounds current money of Virginia to me in hand paid by Jacob Westfall, Jr. of the County of Hardy and the State aforesaid, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge and do by these presents bargain and sell all my Right, Title and Claim by virtue of my Father's last will and testament one half of a tract of land containing ninety five acres lying in Lord Fairfax Manor on the South Branch and coursed by John Westfall's land on the one side and Joseph Petties land on the other side which land is now possessed by Jacob Westfall Jr. and is in law between the said Jacob Westfall Jr. and John Singleton unto the above named Jacob Westfall Jr. which half of ninety five acres the said Jacob Westfall Jr. should recover the said land by law. The said land is to be his and his heirs and assigns forever and I do hereby by these presents in open and plain market sell and make over for myself, and my heirs all my right and claim of the said land unto the said Jacob Westfall Jr. his heirs and assigns by virtue of my father's last will and Testament. Now if the said Jacob Westfall Jr. should recover the said land by law then I, myself, my heirs or Executors are to make over a deed and lawful right such as the law requires for the more efficient conveyance of land to the said Jacob Westfall Jr. his heirs and assigns. [the above deed was part of the estate settlement for land that was part of the original grant to Abel Westfall.  A portion of that land was purchased by Jacob Westfall Jr., but which was being contested by John Singleton who claimed to have purchased it from John Westfall, son of Abel.  The land was then claimed by John's brother Cornelius.  A lengthy law suit ended with a decree that Cornelius, not John was the legal heir since he was the oldest son and thus the claim by Singleton was void since John had no right to sell it.  With this agreement, Zachariah, legal heir to Cornelius, signs his claim as an heir over to Jacob Jr.]

Zachariah purchased 179 acres on Hastings Run in Harrison County on April 18, 1791.    Zachariah then settled on 47 acres on Stony Run of Hackers
Creek in Lewis County.  Hastings Run is located in modern Harrison County, a small branch of Elk Creek near Craigmoor, West Virginia.  Stony Run, a branch of Hackers Creek, is off of Hackers Creek Road in the north east corner of Lewis County. [11]

The will of Josiah Westfall, alias Joseph, was recorded in Randolph County on July 9, 1802. he mentions his brother Cornelius Westfall of Harrison County, his brother Jonathan Westfall, and Zachariah Westfall [not indicated as a brother]. Among those owing money to Joseph's estate are Zachariah Westfall for two years labor and Hezekiah Rosecrance for 17 days of work. [4]

  1812 Andrew Westfall bought 68 acres on Mud Lick Run in now Upshur Co. in 1812 which he and his wife Elizabeth sold in 1826.  Mud Lick Run is just north and slightly west of Buckhannon, West Virginia. [11]

Lynn, 1983.)  [Mr. Hutchison did not show the tax lists that supposedly prove Zachariah was in Mason/Jackson County as early as 1827; however, it could be that Zachariah purchased land there, and thus paid taxes on it, in 1827 but did not more his family there until after 1830]
  1827 John House, "Pioneers of Jackson County, W. Va,". (1906); WESTFALL FAMILY. "Zachariah Westfall was another of the pupils in the first Buckhannon school, along with Thomas Carney and David Casto." [this obviously was not our Zachariah, unless he attended school when he was in his forties] - "He came from Hacker's Creek to Mill Creek in 1827, and settled on Buffalo Lick Run of Tug Fork.  He had several sons, among them Andrew, Owen, Clark, John, and George."   1830 Zachariah Westfall household Listed on the census for Lewis County (which includes Buckhannon in today's Upshur County).  Andrew Westfall appears in the Mason Co. census for 1830.  This seems to indicate to me that Andrew was actually the first in Mason/Jackson County as early as 1827 and Zachariah and the rest of the family arrived there after 1830.

  11 Feb 1934 There is some erroneous information published about Zachariah's roots.  On February 11, 1934, Wilbur C. Morrison authored an article in the Sunday Exponent Telegram of Clarksburg about the Upshur County Westfall family.   He claimed that the West Virginia pioneer ancestor was James Westfall.  He then gives the line to Opha M. Westfall: 1. James, 2. Jacob, 3. Zachariah, 4. Martin, 5. Eli, 6. Opha Marshall Westfall.  The History of Upshur County, West Virginia by W. B. Cutright (probably published about 1910) also states that Zachariah was the son of Jacob, based on the word of Watson Westfall, grandson of Zachariah, to his grandson the Rev. G. G. Westfall. It is likely that the Morrison article was based on the Upshur County history. That history identifies Zachariah's father as the Jacob who built Westfall's Fort. Unless the Zachariah mentioned in these articles is a different man from Zachariah of Harrison County, these articles are most likely wrong.  Early court records (as shown above) give strong evidence that Zachariah was the son of Cornelius and grandson of Abel Westfall. Susanna Westfall was born Abt. 1811 in Harrison County, Virginia. She married Stephen Carpenter on 19 Nov 1829 in Lewis Co., Virginia.  Reports that Susanna died in 1846 in Lewis County, Virginia are apparently wrong; Susanna appears on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Flat Fork, Roane County, Virginia (Stephen Carpenter household). Susanna and Stephen had at least six children:  Andrew Carpenter, born about 1831; John Carpenter, born about 1833 and married a woman named Jane; Phoebe Carpenter, born about 1836; Lucretia J. Carpenter, born about 1838; Sarah Carpenter, born about 1841; George Carpenter, born about 1845. [14]

ELizabeth Westfall  was born about 1812 in Virginia. Elizabeth married Isaac Rollings on 1 July 1832 in Jackson County, Virginia.   She died about 1843 in Jackson County probably as a result of child birth.  Their children were: Lucretia Rollins, born about 1838; Andrew Rollins, born about 1841; Nathan Rollins, born about 1843;  Isaac remarried to Mary Elizabeth Parsons on March 25, 1846 in Jackson County.  John A. House says, "Lizbeth Westfall, married Isaac Rollins, whose second wife was a daughter of Captain Billy Parsons." [15]

iv. William Westfall was born about 1814. According to Ancestry.com Members Public Family Trees, he married Elizabeth Norman on 08 Feb 1833 in Lewis County, Virginia.  I was unable to find a marriage record, which should have been available on the West Virginia History and Archives web site.  Like wise, I have found no supporting records of any kind for William.  Perhaps he left the state and moved west.  There is a William Westfall, born in Virginia, age 35 and presumably his daughter Sarah Westfall enumerated in Sangamon County, Illinois on the 1850 census, pg. 130 dwelling 56.  [10]

vi. Andrew Anderson Westfall was born Abt. 1816 in Mason County, Virginia. He married (1) Mary Baker on 27 Aug 1835 in Jackson County, Virginia; he married (2) Mary Philips on 31 January 1839 in Jackson County. I can find no other record for this individual, either as Andrew or Anderson. This person is sometimes confused with the son of Stephen Westfall, Andrew Jackson Westfall. vii. John H. Westfall  was born on 01 Oct 1818 in Lewis County, Virginia.  He married Marinda Green on 31 May 1840 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia. He died on 29 Aug 1889 in Roane County, West Virginia and is buried at Harmony, Roane County, West Virginia in the Mount Herman Church cemetery; (Harmony was formerly Geneva)). [10,12]

viii. Mary Westfall was born about 1819. She married George Grandee on 30 Mar 1835. She died in 1870. She was also known as Polly Westfall. [10]
__. ix. Calvary Hiram Westfall was born on 20 Sep 1820 in Jackson County, Virginia. He was also known as Hiram Westfall.  I have been unable to find any record with his name.  I believe it is likely that he died prior to 1850.  Noah Westfall named one of his children Hiram possibly in honor of his deceased brother. [10]
15. x. Noah Westfall was born on 01 Apr 1821 in Lewis County, Virginia. Noah was married six times and had children by three of those wives.  He married (3) Martha Chancey on 31 Aug 1845 in Jackson County, (West) Virginia and had five children.  He married (4) Matilda Anne Evans on 25 June 1854 in Upshur County and had five children.  He married (5) Agnes Board on 07 June 1869 in Jackson County and had two children.  He died on 10 Dec 1892 in Jackson County, West Virginia. [7,10]
16. xi.  Martha Westfall was born about 1823. She married Calvary Chancey on 16 Feb 1842. She died Bef. 1849 in probably Jackson County, Virginia [10]
17. xii. Abraham Westfall was born about 1822-24 in Virginia.  He appears on the 1850 census in District 27, Jackson County, Virginia (on same page as brother John H. Westfall and brother-in-law Henderson Harper). [10]
18. xiii. Louise Virginia Westfall was born 1825 in Virginia. She married Fielding Parsons on 16 Oct 1851 in Jackson County, Virginia. [10]
19. xiv. Barbara Westfall   was born on 26 Aug 1826 in Virginia. She married Andrew Stewart on 24 May 1844 [11]. She and her family appear on the 1880 census in Three Forks of Reedy, Roane County, West Virginia. She died on 15 Jul 1917 in Reedy, Roane County, West Virginia. [10,12]
20. xv. Deborah Westfall was born on 22 Nov 1830 in Jackson County, Virginia. She married Henderson Harper on 10 Jul 1849 in Jackson County.  Deborah appears on the 1850 Census in Jackson County,Virginia (Household of Henderson Harper); on the 1860 Census in Roane County, Virginia; on the 1870 Census in Harper Township, Roane County, West Virginia (pg. 18; household of H. Harper). [10,12]
Notes:   The make up of this family is derived mainly from census records which do not give relationships. There were two main family groups in Jackson Co. They were the children and grandchildren of Stephen Westfall and Andrew Westfall. Andrew, sr. was the son of Zachariah and Hannah Wolf. Stephen was the son of John and Margaret Wolf. Zachariah and John were brothers.

  1812 Andrew bought 68 acres on Mud Lick Run in Harrison County, located in what is now Upshur County. The run flows into the Buckhannon River at the town of Buckhannon.  He and his wife Elizabeth sold the land in 1826. [1,8,10]
  1816 Lewis County is formed from part of Harrison and includes Buckhannon in the western part of modern Upshur County

  1826 - 1827 Andrew and Mary Elizabeth sell the farm on Mud Lick Run in Lewis County and remove to Mason County (which later became Jackson and then Roane County). [10]

Zachariah and John were brothers. [1,3,10]

He later moved to Tug Fork. He married Mary Hyre, a sister of Jacob Hyre, Sr.  Andrew Westfall was a man of a good deal of local influence in his community, and like Nimod, was famous for killing the wild beasts of the forest.
His wife died when Mrs. Stewart [daughter, Barbara Westfall] was but five or six years old [1831-2], and later he moved his family onto a hill on the flatwoods of Elk. After remaining there a few years, he bought a farm on Elk Fork, one half mile above Tolley’s mill." [8]

Bishop, William H., Roane County, West Virginia Families (Clearfield Publishing), Pg. 670, 696, STEWART, "Andrew married Barbara Westfall, of the Pocatalico [Westfalls]. ...The Andrew above named is the 'Andy Stewart,' the Reedy miller so many years. The children reared by Andrew and Barbara, his wife, so many as we can recall, are: Dr. David, many years a resident physician of Creston, Wirt County, his wife Emma Robey. See Robey. Elizabeth, who married Andrew J. Ott, of Wirt County, December 22, 1873; and others I have forgotten, and Emma the youngest daughter married William H. Armstrong." [12]

WESTFALL "The name, one time written 'Westfallen' which last is only the plural form of the same word, is the family name of pioneers of the Monongahela Valley. These of whom we are writing came to Poca country from Harrison or Lewis County, as early, possibly, as the year 1845. These were two brothers [father and son], the name of the first we do not have [father Andrew Westfall]. The second was John H. Westfall, of whom and his family we will deal after dealing first with the family of the unknown brother and his wife who settled on upper Flat Fork, or Cox's Fork; their children being two daughters and a son; their names: (1) Barbara, who became the wife of Andrew Stewart, son of William Stewart pioneer of Reedy 1848 or 1850, where Andy and Barbara made their home, attended the mill and reared a large family. See the name 'Stewart.' (2) Deborah, who married Henderson Harper, of Poca; and (3) Noah Westfall, who for his fifth or sixth wife married Martha Rhodes, of lower Poca, year 1881." [12]

Naomi Cutright, b. about 1813, Lewis County, Virginia; d. before 1880, Upshur County, West Virginia; married Nathaniel Cutright, son of Isaac and Catherine Cutright.  We have identified eight children for this couple: Cecilia (b. 1834); Lafayette (b. 1836); Amanda (b. 1839); Laverna (b. 1848); Jamima (b. 1851); Stewart P. (b. 1854); Mary E. (b. 1860); Else (b. 1843).  Gaps in birth dates greater than three years indicate that there were probably other children who may have died young. [13]

Isabell Cutright, b. 1814, Virginia; d. 1905 [6];  Isabell's name and sex was garbled or incorrect on some census returns.  She married Lot Cutright (1811-1881), son of Abram and Susannah (Susan) Cutright in 1839.  They had at least seven children:  Clarissa (b. 1840); Victoria (b. 1843); Naomi (b. 1845); Ann (b. 1848); Adeline (b. 1852); Elethlinda (b. 1854); Alice (b. 1860). He married his cousin Fanny Westfall on 11 Mar 1850 in Lewis County, Virginia.  They had at least one son and one daughter:   Millard F. (b. 1852); Sadona (b. 1857).  He married (2) Eliza A. Henderson on 16 Aug 1894 in Upshur County.   He is Buried in the Hampton Cemetery, Buckhannon, Upshur County, West Virginia. [18]

Cutright, b. 17 Mar 1827, Upshur County, Virginia; according to public family trees published on Ancestry.com he died in 1909; he married Sarah Norvell on 28 October 1850, in Lewis County and they had eight children:  Mary E. (b. 1854); Agnes J. (b. 1856 in Ohio); Thomas A. (b. 1858, Ohio); Charles V. (b. 1863, Va.); Benjamin F. (b. 1867); Seneca Norvell (b. 13 Jul 1869); William (b. 1870); Ira B. (b. 1875).  In 1860 Clark and his family were living in Belleview Townhship, Washington County, Missouri.  Clark returned to his home state and served in the Civil War for three months in 1865; was wounded and granted a pension for life.  [19]

Dexter Wellington Cutright, b. 1829, Virginia; according to public family trees published on Ancestry.com he died in 1897.  He married Julia Ann Kiddy about 1852 and they had two daughters and four sons:  Jerome (b. 1853); Arthur (b. 1855); Philista (b. 1856); Esteline (b. 1858); Averil (b. 1864); Major A. (b. 1867).  The family resided mostly in Buckhannon, Upshur County. [20]

Ann Cutright, born in 1831, Buckhannon, Upshur County, Virginia; died in 1913; I believe she is the Ann Cutright who married Elijah Goodin (Goodwin) on 12 October 1850 in Lewis County.  They had seven sons and three daughters:  William Benson (Benson W.) (b. June 1854); Mary E. (b. 1856); Virginia C. (b. 1858); Allen J. (b. Sept. 1861); James A. (b. 1864); Granville (b. 1866); David (b. Dec. 1869); Austin (b. 1872); D. Anderson (b. Oct. 1874); Minty B. (dau. b. 1878).  According to the census, all the children were living in 1900. [21]

Cutright, b. about 1852 in Virginia; daughter, Sadona Cutright, b. about 1857 in Virginia. [20]

Wilson on 23 Jan 1847 in Lewis County, (West) Virginia, and second to William Casto between 1850-1860, probably in Lewis County.  James Wilson was born about 1828 in Virginia.  James and Rebecca had at least one daughter, Almira Wilson, born about 1848 (some of the children listed here as Casto children may have actually been children of James Wilson); William Casto was born about 1830 in Virginia and died on April 4, 1915 in Upshur County; William and Rebecca had at least five children:  daughter Lydia A. Casto, born about 1852; son George D. Casto, born about 1854; son Sandusky Casto, born about 1856; daughter Florida Casto, born about 1859; daughter Ardelia Casto, born about 1862. [21]

vii. Oliver Westfall was born Abt. 1829 in Virginia.  He married Laura Cutright in 1851; One undocumented source says Oliver died in 1855. Laura died on 17 Nov. 1853 in Upshur County at the age of 25 years 4 months.  Oliver was the informant on his wife's death record.  He apparently disappears from the records after November, 1853.  There is no record of any descendants. [27]
35. viii. George G. Westfall was born Abt. 1832 in Lewis County, Virginia and died after 1900. He married (1) Drusilla Williams (2) Mary V. Lamb.  He was a Methodist minister in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. [28]

Lydia Westfall was born Abt. 1832 in Lewis County, Virginia  and died in 1905 in Upshur County; she married Benjamin Conley about 1858 probably in Lewis County;  Benjamin Conley was born about 1813 in Virginia, the son of James Connely of Ireland; he died between 1880 and 1900.  Benjamin had seven children by his first wife, Sarah A. Dicks (Dix) before she died about 1852-54.  Lydia and Benjamin had five children:  Oscar Gideon Conley, born about 1859; Mary S. Conley, born about 1862; Florence R. Conley, born about 1864; James William Conley, born about 1869; Lilly R. Conley, born about 1859. [22]

Notes:   Lynn Hutchison describes two George Westfall's in Harrison County, Virginia. The elder George Sr. was in Harrison County as early as the 1780's. In 1795 he obtained 260 acres on the Little Kanawha River in Harrison (now Wood County) and an additional 106 acres there in November 1797. This George Westfall died about 1798, two years after the birth of George Westfall, son of Zachariah. Mr. Hutchison lists George Westfall, son of Zachariah on page 20 of his 1983 revision of his Westfall manuscript. He lists his birth, death and two marriages (Lydia and Ruhama Cutright), but does not list specific sources for these names and dates. This is the only reference to George, son of Zachariah in the Hutchison manuscript. Any reference in the (West) Virginia records for George Westfall in the 1790's or earlier are probably George Westfall Sr., son of Jacob Westfall who accompanied Abel Westfall when they first went to the South Branch of the Potomac about 1748.     HISTORY OF THE SAGO COMMUNITY, "Enoch Westfall, a son of George Westfall and a brother of Martin Westfall and a number of others, came to Truby's Run about 1880. He had two children, Preston and Lummie. His ancestors were among the earliest settlers in Upshur County. Preston married a sister of John Jones and lived for several years on Truby's Run; then he sold his farm and went to Ohio to live and there he has resided ever since. Lummie married John Jones and has always lived in the old home section." [19]
    "JAMES WILLIAM CONLEY, son of Benjamin Conley, whose grandfather was James Conley of Ireland. His father's first wife was a Miss Dix and their children were: Virginia, wife of Enoch Westfall ; Annie, wife of William Rohrbough; Rachel, wife of Granville Post; Eliza, wife of David Teets, and J. It seems very odd that the minister's return to the county clerk is dated August 1844 but the marriage occurred in November.  It appears that maybe someone was "fudging" the books.  It is strange. but true, that father and son, George and Eli both married a Ruhany Cutright a few months apart.  Evidence to support this is, George and Eli appear on the same page of the 1850 census of Lewis County. Both are enumerated with a Ruhama in the household.  In George's household her age is 49 and in Eli's household, her age is 24.  The Cutright's were a large extended family in Lewis and neighboring counties and appear almost everywhere the Westfall's do.  I am fairly certain that researchers interested in the Cutright family could easily untangle the relationship between George's first wife, Lydia Cutright, his second wife Ruhama, and his son's wife also named Ruhama Cutright.

(ZACHARIAH5, CORNELIUS4, ABEL3, JOHANNES2, JURIAEN1) He was born on 01 Nov 1800 in Randolph County, Virginia and died on 27 Jan 1876 in Meigs County, Ohio.  He married Elizabeth Queen in Harrison County, Virginia in 1825.  She was his life-long companion.  It appears that he and most of his family removed from Virginia about 1857 to Ohio.  He appears on the censuses of 1830 in Lewis County, Virginia; 1840 in Harrison County, Virginia; 1850 also in Harrison County, Virginia; 1860 in Meigs County, Ohio; 1870 in Columbia Township, Meigs County, Ohio where he died in 1876.

38. i Levi Westfall was born about 1826 in Harrison County, Virginia.  He married Drucilla Casto on 19 Nov 1847 in Lewis County, Virginia.  Most Members Public Family Trees on Ancestry.com omit Levi.  I believe he was the son of John S. Westfall and Elizabeth Queen mainly because he is found with the multiple family groups related to them in Meigs County, Ohio.  It appears that he went to Ohio about the same time as John and his wife and  children who were still living at home.  Levi would also account for the male child born in the appropriate time frame. ii. Sarah Westfall was born Abt. 1829 in Virginia. She married Marshal Warner on 14 Apr 1851 in Harrison County, Virginia. The Warner family appears on the census for 1860 in Upshur County, Virginia (PO Buckhannon). Marshall Warner, Sarah his wife and three children appear on the 1870 census in Columbia Township, Meigs County, Ohio.  In 1880 in the family is in Sheridan, Clare County, Michigan. [11]

iii. Zachariah S. Westfall  was born Abt. 1831 in Harrison County, Virginia.  He went to Meigs County, Ohio with his parents some time in the 1850's. He married Cordelia McClain in 1857 probably in Meigs County, Ohio.  Between June 1870 and June 1880 he and his family removed from Ohio to Montana Township, Jewell County, Kansas. He died in 1896 in Nodaway County, Missouri. In that year his widow Cordelia Westfall filed for a Civil War pension based on the Service of husband. Zachariah is Buried in Barnard, Nodaway County, Missouri.  [12]

iv. Mary Westfall was born Abt. 1833 in Virginia.  Nothing more is known about her.  She disappears from the records after the 1850 census when she was 17 years old and living with her parents.  It is likely that she married some time in the early 1850's in Virginia, possibly Harrison County.

v. James Lewis Westfall  was born in Sep 1835 probably in Harrison County, Virginia and died on 15 Feb 1914 in Meigs County, Ohio. According to some Members' Public Family Trees on Ancestry.com, he married Lydia Bable on 18 Nov 1860 in Meigs County, Ohio. I have not been able to confirm that, except that his wife's name was Lydia.  James appears on the 1850 in Harrison County, Virginia in the household of his parents; in 1860 he is in Columbia Township, Meigs County, Ohio still in the John S. Westfall household. The census of 1870 in Columbia Township, Meigs County, Ohio, James Westfall wife and children are living in John S. Westfall household. On the census of 1880 he and his family are still in Columbia Township, Meigs County, Ohio and his brother Harvey Westfall  and family are living in an adjacent dwelling. [13]

vii. Cornelius Westfall was born Abt. 1838 in Virginia.  I have been unable to locate Cornelius after he appears in the 1850 census when he was 12 years old and living with his parents in Harrison County, Virginia.

Jane Westfall was born Abt. 1842 in Virginia.  She is living with her parents on the 1850 and 1860 censuses.  I believe she appears on the 1870 census near to her brothers Levi and Zachariah in Meigs County, Ohio.  She is apparently unmarried but she has an eight-year-old girl, Cinthy E. (Cinthia?) I assume to be her daughter.  Also next door to her is her sister Sarah (Westfall) Warner and family.  I was unable to find any other information about her. [10]

Bennet, Upshur County, Virginia.  Hannah died on October 15, 1859 in Upshur County.  She had at least three children:  George L Bennett, b. abt. 1852, Upshur County, Virginia; Emaline S. Bennett, b. about 1855, Upshur County; Sarah Jane Bennett, b. about 1857, Upshur Co.  After Hannah's death, Moses married Mary Barton probably in 1860. [5]

Catherine Warner, born about 1829, Lewis County, Virginia; she married John Paugh (pronounced Paw) in 1856 in Upshur County, Virginia;  John Paugh supposedly died about 1860.  The family of John and Catherine Paugh does not appear on any (West) Virginia census; however, there is a Catherine Pugh, apparently widowed, born in Virginia about 1827, living in Bond County, Illinois in 1860 with four children born between 1852 and 1858.  If her marriage was actually in 1856 as claimed in the W.B. Cutright History of Upshur County, this seems to preclude her.  I do not always trust dates given in local histories as they are usually based on people's memories. [6]

iii. John S. Warner, born about 1832, Lewis County, Virginia; died after 01 Jun 1880 probably in Harrison County, West Virginia.  He married Emily (Wileman?) between 01 June 1850 and 01 June 1860 probably in Harrison County.  It appears that this couple left no descendants. [7]

Warner, born about 1866;  daughter Nettie L. Warner, born about 1867; son Florinus J. Warner, born about December 1869; son Peter S. Warner, born about 1872; son John W. Warner, born about 1874; daughter Cora M. Warner, born about 1875.  This family lived in Ten Mile Township of Harrison County for many years. [10]

Lance on 24 February 1875 in Upshur County; Ruth was born about 1855 and died on 02 January 1878 in Lewis County; George married (2) Mary Louise Hoover on 25 July 1880 in Lewis County; she was born about 1855, her date of death is unknown to me.  George and Ruth had at least two sons:  Boyd Warner, born in February 1876; John D. Warner, born in December 1877.  George and Mary had at least six children, five of whom are known:  daughter Aura E. Warner, born July 1882; son Aldrin D. Warner, born in April 1886; daughter Elda Warner, born December 1890; daughter Bertie Warner, born June 1893; daughter Emma L. Warner, born August 1894. [11]

i. Granville Westfall was born 1829 probably in Mason County, Virginia.  He married Jeanette Teel on 16 Dec 1848 in Jackson County, Virginia.   He is on the 1850 census as of 01 Jun 1850 in Dist 13, Lucas County, Iowa (Household of Granville Westfall). He died 1891. [11]

ii. Lot Westfall was born in 1829. He appears on the 1850 census as of 01 Jun 1850 in Dist 13, Lucas County, Iowa. He died on 27 Oct 1851 in Lucas County, Iowa (from headstone), buried in the Last Chance Cemetery in Lucas County, Iowa.  Apparently never married and left no dependants. [12]

Dorcus Lydia Westfall was born 03 Dec 1831 in Lewis County, Virginia and died 24 March 1868 in Jackson County, West Virginia and is buried in the Frozen Camp Cemetery in Jackson County, West Virginia; She married (1) Joseph C. Teel on 25 December 1849 in Monroe County, Iowa; he died without issue; (2) George W. Knopp, 22 June 1854 in Jackson County, Virginia, and had four children born in (West) Virginia: Lewis Evert Knopp, b. 1857; Rebecca C. Knopp, b. 1860; Arizona Knopp, b. 1862; Emily Jane Knopp, b. 1865.  [13]

iv. Calvin Westfall was born 1834 in Virginia; in 1870 Calvin was living alone in Mariposa County, California.  He died in Jackson County, West Virginia in 1891.  Apparently left no descendants. [14]

v. George Westfall was born 1838 in Virginia.  In 1850 George was in the household of older brother Granville in Lucas County, Iowa.  I was unable to find any other information. [11]

vi. Rebecca Westfall was born 1839 in Virginia and died in 1886 in Walla Walla, Washington Territory.  She married (1) Albert Boggs on 07 December 1856 in Iowa.  He was born about 1836 and died between 1860-64.  Rebecca and Albert had at least two children:  James B. Boggs, b. about 1857 in Iowa; William H. Boggs, b. about 1859 in Iowa.  These children do not appear on a later census (that I can find) - did they and their father all die about the same time?  Rebecca married (2) Norman F. Butler about 1864 in Iowa.  Norman was born in 1829 and apparently lived to be over 100 in Washington State, dying in 1931;  Rebecca and Norman Butler had at least six children: Lydia B. Butler b. 11 June 1865, Iowa and died 24 December 1894 in Walla Walla, Washington; Edward E. Butler, born about 1866 in Washington Territory; Justus Butler, b. about 1868 and d. before 1880 in Walla Walla, Washington; Stella M. Butler, born about 1870; Martha Belle Butler, b. about 1872; Henry Butler, b. about 1879.  Norman is listed on the 1900, 1910 and possibly other 20th century censuses.  This family resided in Walla Walla, Washington from the time it was a U.S. Territory untill well into the Twentieth Century.  vii. William Westfall was born on 14 February 1843 in Lewis County, Virginia and died in 26 February 1889, Umatilla County, Oregon.  He married Sarah H. Wilson about 1871 in Baker County, Oregon.  William and Sarah had at least five children. [16]

"Zachariah Westfall ... had several sons, among them Andrew, Owen, Clark, John, and George.  Clark Westfall, brother of Andrew, lived on Frozen Camp, about a mile from the mouth. He owned the Elias and Sam Parsons farm. He is described as a school teacher and a good one, too. He taught in different little cabin schoolhouses, or vacant dwellings, during the 30's and 40's. Clark Westfall sold his farm to Charles Parsons in 1846, and moved to the west". [died in Iowa in 1849]

  1801 Durrett, Ralph (1975); CHILDREN OF ZACHARIAH WESTFALL AND HANNAH WOOLF - Fifth child: "Clark Westfall, born about 1801, probably in Harrison County, probably died in Jackson County prior to 1850 [died in Iowa in 1849]. He was in the Jackson County census of 1840. He had a wife and five children at home between the ages of 5 and 15. We do not have a marriage for him unless it was a second marriage. There was a Clark Westfall married in Jackson County in 1847 to Martha R. Leal [sic] [Martha R. Teal]. This might have been a second marriage or the marriage of a son."

i.  Harvey Westfall He was born Abt. 1836 in Virginia and probably died in Vinton County, Ohio sometime in the 1890's.  He married Virginia Walburn about 1861.  Harvey appears on the census of 1860 in Columbia Township, Meigs County, Ohio in the John S. Westfall household; his age was 24. He was located in Wilkerville Township, Vinton County, Ohio for the census of 1870 with his wife Virginia Westfall and four children. In 1880 he and his family are back in Columbia Township, Meigs County, Ohio living next to his brother James; in his household is his mother-in-law Elcey (Elsie) Walburn.  The 1890 Special Census of Civil War veterans in Vinton County, Ohio he is listed as Harvey Westfall, Pvt. Co. G 14th W.Va. Inf., enlisted in August 1862 and discharged in 1865.  Children of Harvey and Virginia:  John D. Westfall, b. 1862 in West Virginia; William S. Westfall, b. 1866 in Ohio (probably Meigs Co.); Elizabeth J. Westfall, b. about 1868, Ohio; Elcy (Elsie) Westfall, b. January, 1870 in Vinton County, Ohio, probably died young and unmarried; Martin C. Westfall, b. 1873 in Ohio.  [9]

Abel, b. abt. 1857 probably in Lewis Co.; Nancy S. Abel, b. abt. 1860; Alfred Abel, b. abt. 1863; Virginia Abel, b. abt. 1867.  Samuel remarried after Miriam's death to Elmira Harris on 19 Sep 1872 and had several more children.  Samuel died about 1889 in Lewis County, West Virginia.  [10]

Henderson Westfall born 07 Jul 1842 in Barbour County, Virginia, died 20 Nov 1924 Tallmansville, Upshur County, West Virginia; married Rachel Slaughter on 14 Apr 1864 .  She was born 20 Feb 1833 Lewis County, Virginia, died 20 May 1930 Tallmansville, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA.  She was the daughter of John Slaughter and Nancy Skinner. This couple left no descendants. [11]

iv. Amanda Westfall born 04 Aug 1844 Harrison Co. West Virginia and died 10 Nov 1909 Upshur Co.,West Virginia.  She married Lorenzo Dow Black in Upshur County on September 21, 1864.  He was born about 1845 in Barbour County, Virginia.  The couple had six children all born in Upshur County:  Mary C. Black, born about 1866; Ulysses G. Black, born June 1868; Granville Dexter Black, born about 1871, died May 16, 1937;  Sue Ellen Black, born about 1874; James? O. Black, born about 1878 (it is strange that this family had two children named James); James M. Black, born May 1880.  [12]

v. Martha Westfall born about 1847 Barbour County, Virginia.  She married Jacob C. Maxson on 18 Apr 1864 Upshur County, West Virginia .  He was born about 1846 in Virginia.  They had at least seven children all born in Upshur County:  John E. Maxson, born December 1864, Married (1) Ida B. Deauley, (2) Catherine Dunnington; Arena Maxson, born June 16, 1868, married C. W. Robinson; Elmira V. Maxson, born about 1872;  Mary E. Maxson, born September 20, 1874;  Martha A. Maxson, born August 4, 1878; Lucy M. Maxson, born July 24, 1881; Jacob Maxson, born December 6, 1884.  [13]

vi. Marietta (Mary E.) Westfall born about 1849 in Virginia.  She married James R. Lewis who was born about 1857 in Virginia. I have been unable to locate any information on her or her family.  [14]

Westfall born about 1852 in Upshur County, (West) Virginia.  She married Lafayette Crouser, son of John and Nancy Crouser, on January 12, 1868 in Upshur County.  He was born in Barbour County, Virginia about 1848.  Lafayette Crouser married a second time in 1870.  This indicates to me that Margaret probably died in child birth within her marriage.  I am unable to find any other information on Margaret or any indication that she had children.  viii. Elman Westfall, he was born 13 Jan 1854 in Upshur Co.,West Virginia and died 20 Apr 1861 of epilepsy at the age of seven. [16]

i. Margaret Queen, born about 1835 and died on August 18,1878 in Lewis County. She married Thomas E. Dennison on September 11, 1852 in Harrison County.  The couple had six children:  Sarah Dennison, born about 1854; Susan Dennison, born about 1856; Reason Dennison, born about 1859; Courtland Dennison, born about 1861; Margaret R. Dennison, born about 1866; Joseph C. Dennison, born about 1867.  [7]

ii. Susan Ann (Susannah) Queen, born about 1836 in Harrison County and died on November 27, 1907 of Consumption (TB).  She married Andrew B. Denison on June 25, 1854 in Harrison County, Virginia. The couple had three children that we know of:  William E. Dennison, born in 1855; John R. Dennison, born about 1858; Mary J. Dennison, born about 1868.  [8]

iii. Charles W. Queen, born about 1840 and died on November 22, 1913 in Bridgeport, Harrison County.  He married Edith Hannah, daughter of Maffon & Edith Hannah, in Upshur County on April 5, 1857.  The three children we know of are:  James M Queen, born about 1859; Sarah Queen, born about 1860, married Jasper Bright; Charles M. Queen, born about 1870; Charles Sr. served with the Confederacy in the 20 Virginia Cavalry, which partly explains the gap in the ages of the children.[9]

iv. Clark W. Queen, born about 1843.  He married Sarah C. Queen, daughter of Levi J. and Nancy Queen[10]

Edwin Queen, born about 1846 died of dysentry on August 18, 1853 and the age of six.  Several Queen children, including brother John and several cousins, all living in the Peel Tree community of Harrison County died in August and September, 1853.  This seems to indicate to me that a contaminated water source, either a well or stream, was to blame.

vi. John Queen, born about 1848 died of dysentry on August 18, 1853 at the age of five.  This must have been a terrible tragedy for this family.
Notes:

Sarah Westfall was born Abt. 1816 in Harrison County, Virginia. She married Reason Queen on 01 Nov 1833 in Harrison County, Virginia. She supposedly died on 05 Apr 1844; however, she gave birth to son John Queen about 1848 and I expect that is the year of her death.  Reason Queen remarried to Elizabeth Romine in February 1853.  The information on her children comes from the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Harrison County.  I was able to verify the children from marriage and death records available on-line through West Virginia's Archives and History database.  These records often give the names of parents of the bride and groom. 

NOTE:  Census dates - The information in each census return was supposed to be as of 01 June (unless otherwise indicated), regardless of when the census taker actually visited the family.  In every case, I have used the official date of the census.

Harrison County Marriage Bonds, Book 5 page 173 [first part is a hand written note signed by Z[achariah] and Hannah Westfall; the second part is a printed form with names, signatures, etc. filled in]:  "To the Clark of Harrison County this is to authorize you to grant [license] for our Daughter Sarah Westfall and Reason Queen in the holy State of Matrimony [given] under our hands and seals this 27th day of October 1833       Z. Westfall   {seal}  Hannah Westfall {seal}  teste Clark Westfall  John S. Westfall.

Know all men by these presents, that we Reason Queen and John Westfall are held and firmly bound unto John Floyd Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, for the time being, and his successors, for the use of said Commonwealth, in the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars; to which payment, well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our and each of our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, by these presents, sealed with our seals, and dated this 28th day of Oct. 1833.
      Whereas a marriage is suddenly intended to be had and solemized between the above bound Reason Queen and Sarah Westfall

Now the condition of the above obligation is such, that if there be no lawful cause or just impediment to obstruct the said marriage, then the above obligation to be void, else to remain in full force and virtue.  [signed] Reason Queen {seal}  John S. Westfall {seal}"
