JURIAN WESTFALL (NICHOLAS

WESTPHALEN, JURIAN1)
was born 1629 in Holland, and died Abt. 1667 in Esopus
(Kingston), New York. He married MARRETJE
HANSEN 1654 in Esopus (Kingston), New York,
daughter of HANS VAN NOORDSTRAND
and RYMERIG VOLKERT. She
was born 1636 in Norstrand, Holstein, Holland, and died
1680 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York.
Notes
by Walter Westfall:
Much of the information
above came from a book about the Westfall's researched by Ruby
Genevieve (Lentz) Wilmore, the daughter of my father's half sister
Grace (Westfall) Lentz, and from internet sources.
On August 4, 1642 my ancestor
Jurian Westfall (Juriaen Van Westphalen) arrived in
New Amsterdam, New York aboard a ship called "The
Houttuyn" from Luyderdorp, Holland. He was only
13 at the time. His family had migrated to Holland
from Westphalia in Germany in the 1600's. It is not
known whether his parents died in Holland or enroute,
or he came with other relatives.
My first recorded Westfall ancestor
came to America 8-4-1642 aboard a ship called ''The Houttuyn"
which left Texal, Holland 6-6-1642. At age 13 Jurian (George)
Westfall arrived at the port of New Amsterdam (New York). He
had lived in Luyderdorp, The Netherlands. His Westfall ancestors
had immigrated to Holland from Westphalia in Germany about 1600.
The name Westfall originally was preceded by Von which indicated
German nobility. It is not known whether his parents died in
Holland or enroute, or he came with other relatives. Jurian
married Maritge (Mary) Hanson whose father was Hans Hanson who
had a farm on Long Island. According to old Dutch Reformed Church
records they were married in 1655 and had 6 children: Rymerick,
Johannes (our direct ancestor who married Maritge Kool), Abel,
Elsjen, Symen, and Nicholas. According to old records Jurian
was a farmer, and he was killed by indians while acting as a
guide for a troop of soldiers in 1667. His eldest son was Johannes
born in 1659 who was our direct ancestor. Johannes moved with
his family in about 1700 on the Delaware River near the NY/NJ
line. Johannes grandson Cornelius moved with his family to Virginia
about 1770. Cornelius's great-great grandson Jasper moved to
Fieldon, IL in 1893.
I found the following
information in a book "American Nomads"
written by Emily Stowell whose ancestor Jacob Kuykendall
married Sara Westfall daughter of Johannes. The Esopus
Indians lived near Wiltwyck and for a number of years
they were peaceful, but in 1663 they burned and looted
the town. There were 12 men, 2 children, and 4 women
killed, and 6 women and 7 children taken prisoner.
Jurian and his family escaped harm at the time, but
later in 1667 or 1668 Jurian was killed by Indians
who were at war with the Esopus Indians while he was
guiding a troop of British soldiers.
Children of JURIAN
WESTFALL and MARRETJE HANSEN are:
Notes for RYMERICK
WESTFALL: Rymerick's husband Thomas Quick was killed by
the Iroquois Indians during a raid in 1696 as were other
members of the family. There is a marker on state road 209
that marks the spot of the massacre of the Westfall family.
Rymerick was Jurian's daughter.

JOHANNES WESTFALL (JURIAN3,
NICHOLAS JURIAN2
WESTPHALEN, JURIAN1)
was born 1659 in Esopus (Kingston), New York. He married
MARRETJE KOOL,
daughter of JACOB KOOL
and MARRITJE SIMONS.
Notes by Walter Westfall:
In 1696 Jurian's son Johannes (my direct ancestor}
and 18 others including his brothers Symen, Nicholas,
and his widowed sister Rymerick Quick bought land
from the Minsi Indians along the Delaware River near
the New York/New Jersey line. The land lies principally
in Deerpark Township, Orange County, New York. The
peaceful Minsi Indians were one of the three tribes
of the Lenni Lenape people. About 1699 Johannes and
his family moved to what was called the Minisink settlement.
They were among the first white people to live in
the area. Johannes oldest son Jurian and his friend
Jacob Kuykendall hunted and trapped with the Minsi
Indians as youths, and later traded with them. Jurian
married Jacob's sister Styntje Kuykendall and Jacob
married Jurian's sister Sara westfall. They raised
their families and farmed there in the Minisink Valley
along the Delaware River at peace with the Indians
for many years. Jurian had the first apple orchard
in the area, and Jacob established the first trading
post.

Child of JURIAN WESTFALL
and STYNTJE KUYKENDALL is:
JACOB
WESTFALL.
In about 1754 to
1760 there were the French and Indian Wars,
and even friendly Indians like the Minsi joined
with the French against the settlers all throughout
the colonies. Every small community built their
own fort to protect themselves from the marauding
Indian attacks. There was a Westfall fort along
the New York/New Jersey line. There was also
a Westfall Fort, a stockade fort erected by
Jacob Westfall in 1774, located on the southern
border of the site of Beverly, Randolph County,
Virginia (now West Virginia) near mouth of Files
Creek. Scene of an Indian attack in 1782. Jacob
was the son of Jurian and Styntje (Kuykendall)
Westfall. Jacob migrated to the wilderness of
Virginia in 1743 with his Uncle Abel and cousin
John.
David Tygart (or
Taggart) and Robert Files (or Foyle) were the
first settlers in present-day Randolph County.
They arrived in 1753 (or 1754). Files built
his cabin near Beverly and Tygart's cabin was
constructed two miles to the north. The Tygart
River and Valley are named in honor of David
Tygart and Files Creek is named for Robert Files.
That winter, Indians attacked the Files' cabin
and killed him, his wife, and five of his six
children. One of his sons was not in the cabin
at the time of the attack and escaped. He ran
to Tygart's cabin to warn him of the Indians'
presence. They then left the county for good,
moving east into Pendleton County. Eighteen
years passed before the next settlers arrived
in Randolph County. In 1772, several families
moved to the area, including the Hadden, Conley,
Whiteman, Warwick, Nelson, Westfall, Riffle,
and Stalnaker families.
Two small forts
were constructed in present-day Randolph County during Lord
Dunmore's War in 1774. Fort Westfall was constructed at
Beverly and Fort Currence near Huttonsville. Other small
stockade forts were soon constructed. Jacob's son George
Westfall later also had a fort in the area. The area's settlers
gathered in the forts whenever Indians were known to be
in the area. Isolated incidents between the settlers and
Indians continued for many years. The bloodiest incidents
occurred in April and May 1791 when an Indian raiding party
killed about a dozen settlers in the county. Among those
killed were Joseph Kinnan and three of his five children.
They were killed on May 11, 1791. His wife was taken captive,
and was not released until the Indians' defeat at the Battle
of Fallen Timbers in 1794. A few days after the Kinnan's
were killed, the Indian raiding party killed Frank Riffle
and William Currence. It is believed that they were the
last settlers killed by Indians in Randolph County

of Grand Creek, Bunker Hill (where he was wounded),
Stony Point, Brandywine, Trenton and Bloody Run. He
was the son of Petrus and Arientje (Rosencrans) Westfall.
[NOTE
by Ron Wall:
Cornelius Westfall Jr. applied for a Rev. War pension
which was denied. He applied based on the belief that
he was eligible because of service in the Indian wars
that followed the Rev. War. Several Westfall researchers
have said that Cornelius Sr. had also served. I have
yet to see any documentation to support this. ELEANOR
MAGDALENE WESTFALL was the widow of David Cole and

Notes
by Walter Westfall:
Jasper Mifflin Westfall was born near Roanoke in Lewis
County West Virginia in 1857. He died on his farm near
Fieldon in Jersey County Illinois in 1934. He was the
son of Emanuel (1828-1863) and Hannah Kelley Westfall
(1837-1918). His father Emanuel Westfall was killed
while plowing during the Civil War in 1863 in West Virginia,
the year West Virginia split off and became a separate
state.
After my great grandfather's
death his wife Hannah Kelley Westfall, moved with
her 2 sons (my grandfather Jasper who was only 6 and
his one year old brother Emanuel Jr.) to Bloomington,
IL. She may have had relatives in the area.
In 1878 at the age of 21
my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall married his
first wife Mary Jane Shannon. That same year they
moved with her parents accompanying to near Coyville,
Kansas. It was near the Oklahoma line. He farmed near
Coyville, Kansas in the 1880's when he was married
to his first wife Mary Jane Shannon. They had 6 daughters-Eva,
Nora, Stella, Mamie, Grace, and Marietta who died
when a baby.
It was said my grandfather
Jasper Mifflin Westfall once went on a cattle drive
on the Chisholm Trail. An old family story was that
Jesse James once stayed at my grandfather's farm when
he was wounded and later came back with a cow and
gave the family the cow for helping him. Also it was
said my grandfather sometimes wore 2 pearl handled
long barreled 44 caliber revolvers in those days.
In about 1886 he and his
family went with a team of oxen pulling his wagon
from Kansas to W. Virginia where he was born. He lived
near Reedyville (now Reedy), W. Virginia in Roane
County. At least two of his uncles lived there at
the time, and an aunt Merinda sister to his father,
having moved there from Lewis County W. Virginia.
There in about 1893 after divorcing his first wife
Mary Jane Shannon, he met and married my father's
mother and my grandmother Frances McCaulley. Shortly
after their marriage they then left West Virginia
and settled in the Jersey County, IL area about 1893.
In 1893 my grandfather
divorced his first wife and married my grandmother
Frances McCaulley. He and his first wife had 6 daughters--Stella,
Mamie, Grace, Nora, Eva, And Marietta who died a few
months after birth. My grandfather moved to near Fieldon,
IL in 1893 shortly after his marriage to his new wife.
In 1899 he bought the farm where my father was raised
and where I was born and raised south of Fieldon,
IL.
My father said his father
was a stern disciplinarian and once whipped him with
a blacksnake whip until his back was bloody because
he had disobeyed him. He said his father was a big
man and his mother was small woman with red hair.
He said his father planted an apple orchard on the
hill above the farmhouse and had a large grape arbor.
He farmed about 300 acres at one time. My father and
his brother Lonnie worked in the field at a young
age.
In later years his father
sold off most his land. He died in 1934 on the farm
after several years of stomach problems. The doctor
thought he might have had cancer. My grandmother died
just a year later. In January of 1936 she went out
barefooted in the middle of the night to put some
straw in a pen for a sow with some little pigs and
died several days later with Pneumonia. My father's
parents are buried in Grimes-Neely Cemetery West of
Jerseyville, Illinois.
The daughters of Jasper
Mifflin Westfall and his first wife Mary Jane (Shannon)
Westfall were Marietta Westfall (who died as a baby),
and Eva Westfall, and Nora Westfall who were raised
by my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall and his
second wife Frances (McCaulley) Westfall on the farm
at Fieldon with my father as he grew up, and the other
half sisters were Mamie Westfall, Stella Westfall,
and Grace Westfall who were raised by their mother,
my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall's first wife,
Mary Jane (Shannon) Westfall in Kansas. She remarried,
but her second husband's name is unknown.
My father's Grandmother
Hannah (Kelley) Westfall (1837-1918) lived with the
family when father was a boy. She was of Irish descent.
She later lived with her other son Emanuel Westfall
Jr., my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall's younger
brother who lived in Gibson City, IL where she died
in 1918.

Notes
by WALTER WESTFALL:
My grandparents had neighboring farms and the families
visited & helped each other at harvesting and butchering
times. My parent's both worked on the farms from an
early age helping their parents. My parents Walter Edward
(Ed) Westfall and Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall eloped
because her parents didn't want her to marry. My mother
packed her clothes and slipped from the house in the
middle of the night while her parents were asleep and
met my father who was waiting with a buggy. They went
to Alton, IL that night and were married the next day
2-26-1921. They were married by a Justice Of The Peace.
My father's oldest brother Lonnie Westfall was best
man. They boarded a train for Gibson City, IL where
my father's Uncle Emanuel Westfall and his family lived.
My father worked there on a farm for about a year before
returning to Alton to run a restaurant on Belle St.
where my sister Mildred was born 4-20-1922. Later my
father worked at Shell Oil and Tannery and He and my
mother lived in Hartford, IL.
In the late 1920's my parents and
their little daughter Mildred moved on a farm near Nutwood along
the Illinois River. It rained a lot while they were there and
the levee broke a time or two. In about 1931 they bought a farm
near my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall's farm near Fieldon,
the home place where my father grew up. It was during The Depression
and times were hard. They had to get water from a shallow well
at a long distance from the house which often went dry. My sister
Mildred walked to same school her mother Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall
had attended several miles away.
Mildred married Russell Oliver Thompson
(1919-2004), son of Logan and Viola (Bowers) Thompson, who lived
on a farm nearby. The marriage ended in divorce and Mildred
returned to her parents farm where her son Russell was born
8-22-1937. Her first husband Russell Thompson remarried to the
former Hazel Schaaf, and they had a son Raymond Thompson of
Fieldon, IL, and a daughter Verna Kay (Thompson) Ontis of Fieldon,
IL, and a stepdaughter Shirley Jean Johnson of Roxana, IL. Later
in the 1940's Mildred remarried to Joseph V. Alben in Alton,
IL. In about 1941 my parents bought my grandfather Jasper Mifflin
Westfall's farm after he and my grandmother's death, from T.
K. Matthews who had bought the farm after their death. There
6-30-1943 I was born, Walter Charles Westfall, the son of Walter
Edward (Ed) Westfall and Lovie Katherine (Kraushaar) Westfall,
near Fieldon, Otter Creek Township, Jersey County, IL. In 1973
my parents and I moved to Pearl, IL. My father Walter Edward
Westfall died 3-15-1977 in Pittsfield, Pike County, IL, and
my mother Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall died 3-17-1995 Pittsfield,
Pike County, IL. My parents are buried in Grimes-Neely Cemetery
3 miles West of Jerseyville, Illinois on IL state Rt. 16.
LOVIE KATHERINE KRAUSHAAR
grandparents came from Germany in the mid 1800's.
My mother Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall is a third generation
American.
1. My mother's grandfather
Frank Kraushaar date of birth about 1836 in Germany,
died about 1879. He emigrated from Germany to America.
He married Julia Anna Albert. She was born in about
1842 in Germany and died about 1900. They are buried
in Fieldon Cemetery in Fieldon, IL.
2. Charles Kraushaar my mother's
father (4-4-1875-11-23-1948) married Caroline Haushalter 4-14-1898
in Jersey County, IL. She was the daughter of George and Margaret
Schiller Haushalter. George J. Haushalter died in 1881, date
of birth 1842 in Missouri. His parents born in France. His father
may have been named named George or John Haushalter. Margaret
remarried in 1885 to George Meyer. They had no children. She
was born 1844 in Bavaria, and died 4-12-1926 in Jerseyville.
She was invalid in wheelchair in later years.
