Westfall Genealogy Research of Delores Jeanne Russell (1931-2010)

The information contained in the family tree below was donated to me by Mrs D. Jeanne Russell of Lebanon, Pennsylvania in March, 2006 before her death in 2010. Mrs. Russell conducted Westfall family history research since the early 1980's. Among her many contacts was Mr. Ralph Durrett of Bellington, West Virginia. Mr. Durrett was a recognized authority on the Westfall family in West Virginia. He was the descendant of the Rev. Jasper Newton Westfall. Mrs. Russell was a descendant of Jurian Westfall through several lines. One of her lines was from Abraham Kittle who married Christina Westfall in the Minisink, New Jersey. Ms. Russell passed away on January 31, 2010. She was 79 years old. I will miss her notes and letters.

Descendants of Jurian Westfall

Generation No. 1

1. JURIAN WESTFALL was born Abt. 1629. He married MARRETJE HANSON 1654.

Notes for JURIAN WESTFALL: Notes from N. Y. Historical Society, printed 1911-1912, Vol. XI. (Dutch Records of WILDWYKE, Book 1) July 12, 1661-May 6, 1664

Cornelis Barense Slecht, plaintiff, demands from JURIAEN WESTGAELT, payment of the amount of one hundred and fourteen gldrs., heavy money, due for wages earned for brewing. Defendant Juriaen WESTVAEL admits he honestly owes the debt. The Commissaries condemn defendant to pay within six weeks.

Gritedgen (Hillebrants), plaintiff, demands that her master say if he knows aught against her as a reason why he discharged her. Juriaen WESTGAER, the defendant, says that when he was sick she went out everyday and returned home late at night, and that he then said to her, "where you have been during the day, go there also at night."

Ordinary Session, held on Tuesday, Nov. 8, Anno 1661. Gritjen Hillebrants, plaintiff, demands Juriaen WESTGAER payment of her full wages, and says that her master discharged her. Defendant denies this, and Gritjen is ordered to produce good witness at the next session of the court.

First Session, held Wed. Nov., 16, Anno 1661.  Gritjen Hillebrants, plaintiff, says that her master discharged, which she offers to prove by two witnesses. They testify that they heard her master say, "where you are during the day, go there also at night!" Juriaen WESTGAER defendant, say that what the witnesse3s say is correct. Both parties having heard, Juriaen WESTGAER is ordered to pay Gritjen Hillebrants a quarter years wages. [Was there a Jurian WESTGAER and a WESTVAEL at Wyltwick in 1661?]

Ordinary Session, held Tuesday, April 18, 1662.  Volckjen Jans, plaintiff, demands from Juriaen WESTVAEL, payment of the amount of fifteen schepels of wheat, according to obligation produced in court. Defendants first default.

Ordinary Session, held Tuesday, May 2, 1662.  Jan Lammersen, plaintiff, demands from Juriaen WESTPHALEN, payment of the amount of sixteen schepels of wheat, according to 0bligation, and procuration received from Volckje Juriaens. Defendant admits the debt, says he is at present unable to pay, requests time, and offers to pay proper interest therefore."The principal, together with the interest I promise to pay next fall." Thus declared, at the pleasure of the plaintiff.

Ordinary Session, held Tuesday Oct. 4, 1662.  Bareht Gerritsen, plaintiff, vs. Juriaen WESTVAEL, defendant, default.

Ordinary Session, held Oct. 17, 1662.  Barent Gerritsen, plaintiff, vs. Juriaen WESTVAEL, defendant. Plaintiff demands payment of the amount of three hundred and fifteen gldrs., thirteen stivers, as per obligation to, and assignment by, Evert Pels, the same payable at beavers price. Defendant admits the obligation and also that he accepted the assignment, but denies owing the whole debt and says he only owes part of it. The Schout and Commisaries order defendant to pay his signed obligation within six weeks.

Ordinary Session, held Tuesday, July 4, 1662.  Mathys Blanchan, plaintiff, demands vindication of his honor. Says that Juriaen told his wife that it was reported that Dirck Adriaensen said to her he had seen Mathys Blanchan beat Juriaen WESTVAEL's pig. Defendant Juriaen WESTVAEL and his wife admit having heard it from Dirck Adriaensen, and state that Pieter Jansen also heard it. Defendant Dirck Adriaesen denies this, and says he did not say so. The Schout and Commissaries order the parties to preserve the peace and sentence Dirck Adriaensen to pay a fine of six gldrs. for the poor.

On September 9, 1665 Jurian Westphall bought a wooden bucket with a small gridiron.

He removed from Kingston to Minisink between 1689 or 1700, as his son, Niclaes, was born in Kingston in the former year and his daughter, Claritje, at Minisink, in 1700. In a deed from him to his son, Jacob, Feb. 22, 1733, both are described as living at Maghaghkenmeck (now Deerpark)." [According in baptismal records, Niclaes was born in 1698, not 1689. The date above was a typing error because the correct date is given in a later sentence - RNW]

OLD SUSSEX COUNTY FAMILIES, THE MINISINK EARLY SETTLERS, pg. 134 (Stickney, published in the 1890's); The next settlement in historic order was the one at Minisink proper. It was essentially a foundation for a village adjacent to the Minsi tribe headquarters. No positive knowledge of its status is left us until the year 1725, although good reason is given from the tenor of early documents for believing that a few settlers grouped in the vicinity some years previously. The Westfall's in particular were undoubtedly there previous to that year. On the 7th of April, 1725, Cornelius Low, Jr., made a survey and map of six plots of land adjoining each other there. There were five acres each in the area upon the New Jersey shore east of the Delaware River, and six tracts of land were at the same time located upon Big Minisink Island, of 55, 25 and 30 acres each respectively. Each owner of one of six small lots owned one of the larger lots on the Island. The owners' names were: Matthew Van Kuykendall, Jurian Westphael, and Jan Cortright. A store, blacksmith shop and hotel were kept there for some time and the village, named Minisink from its Indian surroundings, the old Indian castle being just northeast, their burial ground bounding it on the West, and their council chamber or place where their tribal fires being just across the main stream of the river on what is now Powwow Hill, as a place of considerable importance. The six persons named above are known to have been in possession or to have taken possession of their lands shortly after the before mentioned survey was completed. [The author only names three of the six owners of land on Minisink Island. The one other was Matthew's brother Jacob Kuykendall - RNW]

OLD SUSSEX COUNTY FAMILIES, THE MINISINK EARLY SETTLERS, pg. 143 (Stickney, from W. H. Nearpass of Port Jervis, N. Y., published in the 1890's); "The oldest son of [Johannis], Jurian, was about sixteen years of age when his parents removed to the Minisink country. At what time he removed to the vicinity of Big Minisink Island is not known, but a deed in possession of the Everett family (Allen) of Montague township, shows that he was one of the six owners of the Minisink village. He is alluded to in other documents as the first settler of the Island, and he with very little doubt was there earlier than any of the other settlers because the above deed dated 1731, and his death the same year leaving a widow and seven children would imply a settlement there soon after his first marriage which was about 1709 or 1710, as the first baptism of his children is recorded in 1711. The site of his farm is now owned by Daniel Everett."

Notes for STYNTUN KUYKENDALL: "Styntun" is the Dutch equivalent of Cynthia or Christina.

Old Sussex County Families, THE MINISINK EARLY SETTLERS, pg. 135 (Stickney); Leur Jacob Van Kuykendall (son of Jacob Laursen) who was born and baptized in New York City May 29, 1650, is undoubtedly the American ancestor of all the Kuykendall's in this country. Leur Jacobsen married Grietje Aertzse Tack, who was baptized at Kingston August 1663. She was daughter to Aert Pietersen Tack and Annetje Arians. The latter's second husband, Jacob Jansen VanEtten, was the ancestor of all who bear the name of VanEtten. E. K. Westfall, Bushnell, Illinois, extracts of letter to cousin Frank Mills, Oct. 17, 1892. [entire letter copied by Elma Rust, sent to Ralph Durrett, June 1975]. "Dear Cousin - Your letter received this A.M. I sent it to Mary who may be able to fill in the blanks better than I can. My information is only traditional, but what I do know is just as my father told it. Much, I have no doubt forgotten. I know no other names further back than Grandfather (Jacob). However, his father with two brothers, was the first importation... I do not remember of father telling of his grandfather. Nor do I remember of his speaking of any relatives of his except his Uncle William. I think he went to where Dayton, Ohio now is and made a farm in the woods. My father [Cornelius Westfall] when he became of age went there and rented some ground in his clearing and put in a crop of corn. That winter, I remember he told, while father was gone to Virginia on a collecting tour for some former residents of that state, the stock ate up his crop...  An interesting item connected with the early history of the Westfall's in the country is the fact of their living on the extreme edge of civilization, in Tygarts Valley, Randolph Co., Virginia, now West Virginia. A chain of Forts four or five miles apart, for the protection of the citizens was built along the valley. In these Forts the whole population lived during the spring and summer months. The farms were worked by parties who were constantly guarded by armed parties. Thus they went from one to another until all was done. In winter they removed to their farms, the Indians not venturing to come across the mountains when snow was on the ground as the settlers could track them back and punish them for their trepidations.  Grandfather was Captain of the Fort where the town of Beverly now stands. I think father was born in that stockade. Sister Mary has a good memory and can give you many items...
Your Cousin
E. K. Westfall.

Letter from Jacob Mills to his brother Frank Mills, dated 1909. [copied by Elma Rust, sent to Ralph Durrett, June 1975] "... I don't know that I ever heard Great-grandfather Westfall's name. Grandfather had a brother Joel. His father must have been too old for war at time of the Revolution. He was most likely Cornelius. They were Dutch people.  Grandfather Westfall [Jacob] moved to Kentucky sometime in the latter end of the 18th century. Came down the Ohio, out of Monongahela in pirogues, with quite a number of followers. They went up the Kentucky river, then Salt river, where they settled. He was made a Justice of the Peace there and held the office long enough to be High Sheriff by virtue of being the oldest justice. He had held the same office in Virginia for the same reason. Must have lived in Kentucky about 20 years - perhaps more. Mother was born in Kentucky [Janet Westfall Mills]. I think they moved from there to Miami Co., Ohio about 1810. Uncle Cornelius had preceded them there. I think he went as a surveyor."

Children of JACOB WESTFALL and MARY KING are:

I am sure they had other children but do not know them. Cannot find when and where John and Rachel died."

Letter of Frank Mills (no date); [copied by Elma Rust, sent to Ralph Durrett, June 1975]
"My Aunt Polly Tiberghein was twice married, the first time to a Mr. King. They had three children; Washington, Jeremiah and Julia. Washington was a sober man of business. Jerry King was the jolliest fellow imaginable. He was the favorite of all the connection. I remember him well. He made a good citizen. Came to Iowa with father in '83. He visited us once in Des Moines. Julia married a Mr. Church, a sporting character. Julia was a stylish, dashing woman, and as fond of playing cards for money as our ladies of the present day of playing Bridge or '500' for prizes. Aunt Polly took another husband after King's death and raised a number of children. After grandfather's death, grandmother was taken to Thorntown and lived with Aunt Polly Tiberghein until she died in 1841."

27. SIMEON WESTFALL (SIMON4, JURIAN3, SYMEN2, JURIAN1) was born Bef. February 12, 1748/49, and died 1812. He married SARA COLE Abt. 1764, daughter of DAVID COLE and LEANORA [ELEANOR] WESTFALL. She was born January 1744/45, and died March 12, 1837.

Notes for SIMEON WESTFALL: OLD SUSSEX COUNTY FAMILIES, THE MINISINK EARLY SETTLERS, pg. 144 (Stickney, from W. H. Nearpass of Port Jervis, N. Y., published in the 1890's).  "Simeon and his wife Sarah (Cole) lived in Westfall township, Pike County, Pa., in a stone house opposite a reef of rocks in the Delaware River which took the name of "Sim's Clip" from his name, Simon. His house and barn were burned by the Indians under Brant when they invaded Minisink in 1779. Gumaer tells of a party of soldiers in 1758 who in going from New Jersey to Esopus, stopped at the Westfall Fort for refreshments, where they were attacked by the Indians and seven of them killed. He locates it in Peenpack where Abraham Westfall afterward purchased. The History of Sussex and Warren says that when Brant with his Indians invaded Minisink in 1778, they attacked the same house and killed a man named Westfall." [The attack in 1758 was on the home of Jurian Westfall, not Simeon - RNW]

E. Much, I have no doubt forgotten... Father taught the first school ever taught in Dayton...

It does not seem likely she was his mother, or the birth date is wrong. I'm guessing it was probably more like 1829.]

E. K. Westfall, Bushnell, Illinois, letter to cousin Frank Mills, Oct. 17, 1892.
"Dear Cousin - Your letter received this A.M. I sent it to Mary who may be able to fill in the blanks better than I can. My information is only traditional, but what I do know is just as my father told it. Much, I have no doubt forgotten. I know no other names further back than Grandfather (Jacob). However, his father with two brothers, was the first importation. Our ancestors settled in Virginia. Another brother settled in New York. The other went to Louisiana and was never heard from. It was not known whether he went back to Europe or died. We do know that all the Westfall's who spell their names that way, came from either New York or Virginia branches of the originals. I have met New York Westfall's who have the same tradition as to how the three brothers came to emigrate and where they settled. All 'Westphal's' are more recent importations. The tradition is that in the Old Country, which was then divided into little principalities - Dukedoms - I think. The ruler of one of these, Westphalia, was the senior member of the Westphal's, who was a regular tyrant and often used the power given him by his position to deprive subjects of life or liberty. The three brothers got up a rebellion in an attempt to overthrow the tyrant, but were ignominiously defeated, and had to leave the country to save their lives - or for the good of the country, as my father sometimes put it. I have often heard my father tell of this and also that the tradition in the New York branch of the family was identical.

I do not remember of father telling of his grandfather. Nor do I remember of his speaking of any relatives of his except his Uncle William. I think he went to where Dayton, Ohio now is and made a farm in the woods. My father (Cornelius) when he became of age went there and rented some ground in his clearing and put in a crop of corn. That winter, I remember he told, while father was gone to Virginia on a collecting tour for some former residents of that state, the stock ate up his crop.

Father taught the first school ever taught in Dayton. I knew a Dutchman once who said he had a history of the Westfall rebellion in a Low Dutch book and he gave me the same story that I had heard from my father. Your brother Webb had commenced a history of the family and had made some progress. Do you suppose it was last?

Sister Mary has a good memory and can give you many items.

Yes, Harrison will carry Illinois easy and will be elected. Take time and make us a visit before we all die of old age, can't you.
Your Cousin
E. K. Westfall.
