JOHN WESLEY WESTFALL (ABEL JOHN3,
JOHANNES JURIAEN2, JURIAEN1)
was born October 25, 1724 in Kingston, Ulster
County, New York, and died March 1789 in Hampshire
County, Virginia. He married SARAH
HORNBECK VAN NOY Abt. 1755.
Notes for JOHN
WESLEY WESTFALL: RECORDS OF REFORMED DUTCH
CHURCH KINGSTON, NEW YORK.
John had six sons,
five of whom served in the Rev. War. These sons later migrated
to Ohio and Knox Co., Ind. His will is dated 2/9/1789; he gave
his estate to his two youngest sons Jacob and Isaac. After their
mother died they sold it. Early tax records show there were
two houses on the property. [John] owned several slaves. The
other sons were given the value of the property proportioned
among them. Abraham and John Jr. went to Indiana and died there;
Abel and Cornelius spent a few years in Ohio and they bought
land there, then they too joined their brothers in Indiana.
They bought land there and died; all have left wills which name
the children of each. John furnished supplies to the army during

service. He joined at Winchester, VA and did service at Hillsborough,
NC, Guilford Courthouse, NC (not in this battle), and was discharged
at Salisbury, NC according to pension records. He could have
been in Kings mtn, Cowpens, and Yorktown battle but I have not
studied the activities of the 7th VA regiment in the Continental
army (another project as well as Capt Abel Westfall's 8th VA).
After father Cornelius died in 1781 the children moved away
from Hardy Co Va. Jacob went to KY with cousin Daniel, while
Isaac, Cornelius, Josiah, and Zachariah went to Beverly, Randolph
Co. VA. Josiah died in 1802 and Isaac in 1803. Cornelius and
Zachariah left Beverly in the 1790's and settled at Buckhannon

Notes
for HENRY FRY WESTFALL: His Diary, 1862-62
Henry held
every office in the Militia of Virginia,
from Corporal to Brigadier General,
serving in these various capacities
from 1817-1865. He was also deputy
sheriff, clerk of the circuit and
country courts and postmaster at Buckhannon,
from 1832-1852. Henry F. Westfall
owned much land, around Buckhannon,
and his home, a log house, was on
what is now 82 S. Kanawha Street.
He was living here at the time of
the war, but at that time, it was
not in the town. His wife was dead
and though he had people living in
his home, he took most of his meals
away from home, at his neighbors.
Most of those mentioned in the diary,
were living between his home and Main
Street, on Kanawha Street. He mentions
Victoria V. Mooney. She was the daughter
of his daughter, Elizabeth, who married
James Mooney. She was her grandfather's
pet, and though he was an ardent Union
man, she was a fiery little rebel,
and at one time, was sent with another
young girl, not to Camp Chase, but
to a Sanitarium outside of Columbus,
Ohio, really for their own protection.
They were kept under guard the night
before they were taken away.

purchased both the mill and the farm,
and moved his family here, where he
spent the remainder of his life. He
sold the mill in 1857, to the late
Joseph Frederick, but the farm remained
in the hands of the heirs until a
few years since, when it passed into
the hands of W. E. Hill, who sold
it to Henry Barker, in 1909.

"Joel
J. Westfall was born at Buckhannon,
on August 24, 1819, and here
in the wilds of the forest,
he grew to manhood, having
every opportunity to indulge
his love for hunting and adventure;
and some of these boyish adventures
are scarcely less thrilling
than those of "Robinson
Crusoe", or Stanley in
the jungles of Africa: When
he was but a small lad of
seven summers, on July 26,
1826, he killed the largest
rattle snake on record in
West Virginia, while alone
in the forest watching the
horses for his father. This
mammoth snake measured nine
feet four inches, with rattles
one one-half inches broad.
At the age of eleven years,
he killed three deer by moonlight
in the forest near Buckhannon;
and the following year three
panthers fell as his victims,
and at the age of fourteen,
he slew a bear with his tomahawk.
This was only the beginning
of a hunting record, which,
perhaps, can hardly be duplicated
by another lad among the early
settlers of the State. At
one time he killed a bear
and a panther, which had just
taken the life of a deer.
So famous did these early
adventures make him, that
he was known far and wide,
as the "Boy Hunter".
On one occasion when he came
into possession of a new gun,
as a reward for his skillful
marksmanship, he was asked
by his father what he wished
to do with this gun. He replied
that he wished to kill wild
animals, but that he especially
desired to find a bear cave
that he had heard much about
through his uncle. So with
his father's consent, one
fine morning he set out in
quest of this cave, which
he finally reached after a
long and perilous search.
It was in a large ledge of
rocks, miles distant from
his home, and, searching out
the entrance, he at once started
to explore the Interior, but
finding the darkness so dense,
he was forced to retreat.
However, securing a pine torch
and taking his gun in hand,
he again crawled inside, expecting
to find the bear asleep, but
by the time he had proceeded
fifty or sixty feet, he realized
the fallacy of this expectation,
when he saw the glare of the
bruin's eye coming toward
him. Stepping to one side,
he prepared to fire, but for
fear of being forced out of
the cave, he slid into a crevice,
and the animal dashed by him
with force, and presently
he heard him fall from the
cliff outside, a distance
of thirty feet, and he knew
that he must be dead; and
going outside, he joyfully
claimed his prey and set out
for home, which he reached
after several days' absence
to the relief of his mother,
who had been greatly annoyed
by his prolonged stay. In
after life his hand did not
"lose its cunning",
for while a resident of California,
he killed the largest bear
on record in that State. It
having weighed one thousand
pounds.
At
the age of seventeen years,
he was made lieutenant of
Co. D, 133rd Regiment of the
Virginia Militia, an office
which he held for seven years;
and he was Captain of the
Militia after he came to this
county. On January 22, 1843,
he was married to Miss Eliza
B. Mills, daughter of W. R.
Mills, of Pocahontas county,
the marriage being solemnized
at the home of her brother
at Weston; and J.
R. Westfall, of Smithville,
was the one child of this
union and when he was still
in "the frocks of babyhood"
his young mother passed on,
and on the Frederick homestead
she sleeps.
On April 4, 1854, leaving his
young son with his parents, Mr. Westfall started for California
- lured there by the gold excitement - where he amassed
quite a fortune, and where he rose to prominence in State
affairs. At one time, while digging for gold, he unearthed
a nugget that weighted nineteen ounces, and was valued
at one thousand dollars. He served as Deputy Sheriff at
Mariposa for four years, at the end of which time he was
elected Road Commissioner and Supervisor, an office which
he held for sixteen consecutive years, and one that is
higher in point of importance than that of our sheriff.
Politically he is a Democrat, and he enjoyed the honor
of being a member of the committee that Escorted William
Jennings Bryan, and his distinguished party on their tour
Through the "Golden State", during Mr. Bryan's
first campaign for the Presidency And he had the pleasure
of eating several lunches that were prepared by the hand
Of Mrs. Bryan. On October 6, 1906, he bade adieu to his
adopted state and returned to Smithville, where he is
quietly spending the evening hours of his life with his
son. He is now a nonagenarian, but his memory is a remarkable
store-house of interesting reminiscences of pioneer days.
Later, he died on October 30, 1910, and was laid away
at Smithville, on the homestead of his son.

FAMILY
BIBLE, The Westfall-McAhron Bible record
is in the possession of Lois Hutchins
Whitlock of Corning, Tehama County, CA.
She received it from her maternal aunt,
Ida McAhron Mortenson, who, in turn, had
been given the Bible after the death of
her father, Jacob Lewis McAhron. John
Westfall entered most of the record himself.
This is substantiated by a comparison
of the handwriting in the Bible record,
John's handwriting and signature on original
court records (such as Brooks Heirs vs.
Reed, et al., Bullitt Circuit Court, KY).
Upon examination of James McAhron's signature,
it is likely that he wrote some of his
children's birth entries. James McAhron,
son of William McAhron and Jane Lewis,
was born in Bardstown, Nelson County,
KY. Around 1819 he moved with his parents
to Bullitt County, KY, where he reared
his own family and died.
That
the Bible originally belonged to John
Westfall is also supported by Bullitt
County court records which show that Andrew
Eddington (Bible page 679) had been apprenticed
to John Westfall on 16 June 1821. Furthermore,
Samuel and Jenny Quick (Bible page 579)
are undoubtedly the same as the Samuel
Quick and Jenneke Kortrecht who married
1 June 1775, in the Minisink-Machackemeck
Dutch Reformed Church, Orange County,
NY. Both Samuel's and Jenny's mothers'
maiden names were Westfall. Samuel's and
Jenny's daughter, Lydia Quick Williams,
was John Westfall's fourth cousin.
John Westfall's
father and both of Sarah Westfall's parents
were baptized in the Minisink-Machackemeck
Dutch Reformed Church. Daniel and Henry
Westfall were brothers, sons of Johannes
Westfall and Apollonia Kortrecht. Sarah
Westfall's father was Henry Westfall,
her mother Susanna Kortrecht, daughter
of William Kortrecht who was a brother
of Apollonia Kortrecht and a relative
of Jenneke Kortrecht above. Brothers Daniel
and Henry Westfall left the East Coast
and moved to what is now West Virginia.
They then removed to what is now Bullitt
County, KY, in 1789/90. Their offspring,
John Westfall and Sarah Westfall, married
in Bullitt County, KY.
After the death of both of his parents,
Jacob Lewis McAhron took the Bible with
him when he moved to Carroll County, IN,
in the 1850s. Alice D. McAhron, born in
Carroll County, IN, was Jacob's first
child. Jacob's sister Minerva also moved
to the same county, where she married
Alfred E. Briney. Greenup Briney, their
son, was born in Carroll County, IN. Samuel
L. Nichols lived on land adjacent to James
McAhron's father, William McAhron, on
the Salt River near Cedar Point Creek,
Bullitt County, KY. Samuel's half-brother,
Shadrack Anderson Nichols, married Ellen
Jane McAhron, daughter of William McAhron
and his second wife, Jane Tingle.

JACOB WESTFALL (RUBEN6, JACOB5,

JURIAEN2, JURIAEN1)
was born 1806, and died June 20, 1874 in Louisa
County, Iowa. He married CAROLINE
ELLIOT August 25, 1828 in Putnam County,
Indiana. She died November 29, 1876 in Louisa
County, Iowa.
Notes
for JACOB WESTFALL: 1860 Census for Henry
County in New London Township
YELLOW SPRINGS AND
HURON TOWNSHIP, by J. W. Merril and published 1897 in Mediapolis,
IA we find the following items:
pg 27 ".....They
(the Blair's) found a cabin at Yellow Spring, occupied by Jacob
Westfall and Allen Eliot, a brother of Mrs. Westfall. These
claimants had come in the winter of 1834, and the Westfall cabin
was the first habitation built in the township. ....... In this
cabin, a few months later, Jacob Westfall jr first saw the light
of day and set up his claim, which has never been disputed,
as being the first white child born in Yellow Springs township."
pg 31 " Josiah
Edwards married Pamelia Westfall in the spring of 1836. This
was the first wedding in Yellow Spring Township. " and
"In the spring of 1836, Reuben Westfall, the father of
Jacob came, with his children and relatives - an extensive connection
when they all got in. They were the Anderson's, Kings, Proctors,
Swanks, Rouses, Holts, Gobens and Barnes, who settled near Yellow
Spring, on the south side of Round Prairie, and on the Bottom."
pg 49 "THE WESTFALL
FAMILY. It has been a difficult matter to obtain any sketch
of this family of early settlers. Jacob was one of the first
claim makers and built the first cabin in the township, as other
where recorded. He appears to have been a man given to hospitality,
and his cabin was a home and a preaching place for the itinerant
for many years. His father, Reuben Westfall, and other sons
came in later, settling in the Yellow Spring neighborhood and
on the Bottom. They are all gone now. One son, Jacob Jr. the
first white child born in the township, was here a few years
ago, but he is now in the west.

the first postmaster in the township. This was the original
Hawkeye post office, from which the school in the neighborhood
took its name.

AND HART FAMILIES IN UPSHUR COUNTY; "Meanwhile,
Col. Westfall's granddaughter, Victoria
Virginia Mooney (1844-1924) according
to various sources, was a young rebel
girl in Buckhannon, and refused to walk
under the Union flag during the Civil
War. She was arrested, taken to Camp Chase
in Ohio, allowed to stay at a sanatorium,
and eventually released. Creed Hart, upon
his return from the war, married this
rebel girl, and they settled in Buckhannon.
Creed was a merchant and he and Victoria
raised a family of four children, including
Henry Westfall Hart (1876-1950) the grandfather
of the author of this paper. Both Creed
and Victoria died and were buried in Buckhannon."
The Harts lived on the same land, as had
Mr. Westfall. The old log house burned
to the ground, but a lovely brick home
was built, which today, remodeled, still
stands back from the street, on a spacious
lawn. Just in the past ten years has it
gone out of the family. Mrs. Hart's daughter,
Frances Ritzinger, has passed away, but
she will always be remembered for her
charming graciousness, her lovely voice,
and her willingness to sing, for her friends, accompanying
herself at the piano.

PROTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL
ALBUM, LOUISA COUNTY, IOWA 1889 F627 28 page 8: G. W. Westfall,
a farmer residing on section 7, Oakland Township, was born in
Boone County, Ind., in 1831, and was the second in a family
of nine children born to Jacob and Caroline (Elliott) Westfall.
His father was a native of Kentucky, while his mother was born
in York State, and when a young man Jacob Westfall removed to
Indiana, where he was married and there followed farming for
several years. In 1834 he followed the course of Western emigration,
settling in Des Moines County, Iowa, entering a claim in Yellow
Springs Township, which he later purchased at the Burlington
land sales. He also resided in Washington and Henry Counties,
and in 1862 came to Louisa County, locating in Oakland Township,
where he remained some years, when he went to Kansas, but after
a short time returned to Louisa County, and made his home with
our subject until his death, which occurred June 20, 1874. His
wife survived him for about two years, dying Nov. 29, 1876.
Our
subject grew to manhood upon a farm, and
received his education in the district
schools of the state. He was among the
first to respond to his country's call
for troops, enlisting in September 1861
as First Sergeant of Company D, 4th Iowa
Cavalry, and was mustered into service
at Camp Harlan in Mt. Pleasant. He participated
in the battle of Vicksburg, and was engaged
in scouting expeditions and skirmishes
in the Southern and Southwestern States.
In the battle of Oakland, Miss., he was
wounded by gunshot, and on the 4th of
November 1864, was honorably discharged
at Davenport, Iowa. After the cessation
of hostilities, he returned to Louisa
County, where, during his term of service,
he had purchased a farm of 230 acres.
He has since disposed of a part of that
tract, and now has remaining about sixty
acres of fine, arable land, which is highly
cultivated and improved.
On the 2d of September,
1869, in Louisa County, Mr. Westfall led to the marriage alter
Miss Alice M. Blake, daughter of Joseph and Ester (Hungerford)
Blake, the father a native of Greenbrier County, W. Va., the
mother of New York. Accompanied by his family, the father came
to Louisa County in 1838, settling in Oakland Township. He had
then been twice married, and in 1851 wedded Esther Hungerford,
who came to the county in 1845. They settled on section 7, Oakland
Township, he buying the land at the Burlington land sales, and
there resided until his death, Dec 14, 1883, aged eighty years.
Mrs. Blake is still living, and resides in Barber County, Kan.
By
the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Westfall
two children were born; Lottie I., wife
of E. Garard, who lives on the old homestead;
and Gertie, who died March 4, 1881, at
the age of four years. Mr. Westfall is
an active worker for the interests of
the Republican party, and an ardent supporter
of its principles. He has held several
local offices of trust, in which he discharged
his duties faithfully and well. His home
is pleasantly situated about two miles
from Columbus Junction, between the forks
of the rivers, where the land is very
productive. He is a systematic and progressive
farmer, and as a citizen ranks high in
the community.
Children
of GEORGE WESTFALL and ALICE BLAKE are:
