Descendants of John Corbett

Updated from "Descendants of Obediah Corbett" November 2011

We have corrected this tree to remove Obediah as our ancestor and replace him with James Corbett (1807-?) who married Maria Gwinett (1807-1865)

Sources

Generation No. 1

1. John Corbett - his name is from the "YOUNGMAN FAMILY TREE," Member Public Family Tree, Ancestry.com).  I believe this information comes from the marriage record of his son James and Phoebe Price.  His wife was Victoria, which is probably from the same document.  I hope to soon have more information to post here.

Child of John and Victoria Corbett:

2. James Corbett b. 1777, Wellington, Shropshire, England

Generation No. 2

2. James Corbett (John 1) was born in 1777 in Wellington, Shropshire, England to John Corbett and Victoria (?).  He married Phoebe Price in Wellington on 05 June 1803.  Phoebe was born in 1784 and died in 1823.  They had eight children.

Children of James Corbett and Phoebe Price:

_. i. John Corbett born in 1804 in Wellington, Shropshire, England

_. ii. Victory Corbett, she was born in 1805 in Wellington, Shropshire, England

3. iii. James Corbett, he was born April 12, 1807 in Bliston, Staffordshire, England; marrie (1) Maria Gwinett, (2) Lydia Long.

Generation No. 3

3.  James Corbett (James 2, John1 ) was born on April 12, 1807 in Bliston, Staffordshire, England to James Corbett (1777- ?) and Phoebe Price (1784-1823).  It is not known when he died.  He first married Maria Gwinett (Guinnett), daughter of John Guinnett (1761- ?) and Sarah Howes (1769-1865). They were married on 26 May 1828 in Tipton, Staffordshire, England. Maria bore all of the children of James.  Maria Gwinett was born 11 Feb. 1807 in St Martin Parish, Tipton, Staffordshire. She died on 30 Mar 1865 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England. He married second Lydia Long in 1866 shortly after Maria's death.

I found Obediah Corbett and his family listed on the 1851 and 1861 censuses of England and I mistakenly assumed that he was the father of 4. James because of the area where they lived.  In October 2011 I was contacted by a descendant of Obediah, Philip Nigel Bailey.  Nigel was helping me with the Corbett family line when he discovered the younger James' and Annie Beckett's marriage certificate.  It clearly states that James' father was also named James.  I believe that there is a good chance that James' and Obediah's families were related.

NOTES:  Information on James Corbett was supplied by his son, Arthur Corbett, Sr. on James' death certificate. The 1900 census of Ashland County lists James Corbett in the household of son-in-law Thomas and daughter Sady Anderson. It states that James immigrated to the United States in 1881 and had been in the country 19 years. His occupation on the census is listed as "yarn bundler" but more than likely it was "iron bundler" (iron worker) which is the occupation listed on the 1874 English birth registration of his son Arthur.

NOTES: The affidavit to his birth states that Arthur Corbett lived continuously in the USA since 1881. Daughter-in-law Osa Corbett gave information that Arthur came to the US when he was four or five (he was six). He returned to England when he was twelve and returned to the United States when he was about sixteen.  I have been unable to document this last fact.

On the 1930 census for Akron, Summit Co., Ohio (Indexed) Arthur gave the date of his immigration as 1881. The family appears on the 1881 census in Stafford, England. The 1820 Census of Akron indicates that Arthur was naturalized in 1892.
